“Fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

An amazing survival. Rebuilt after a fire in 1702 but with techniques and materials unchanged since the 11th century. A shining example of the best Unesco listing can offer. You must visit the visitor's centre, the archaeological museum and the Hanseatic museum to work out what is going on. Amazing.

“Picturesque and that's about it..”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

Very pretty bit of the city - old wooden houses, brightly coloured and leaning at incredible angles. Lots of souvenir shops, outrageous jumpers and jerseys. If you're in Bergen, you pretty much have to take a stroll down here.

Very picturesque and emblematic of Bergen. Old wooden buildings overhanging tiny alleyways. Well worth a visit.

“Beautiful, pseudo- historical”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

On the left is the wharf, and on the right- the wooden buildings... This short street shines in good weather, and it is a bit shy in the rest of time.
Bryggen is the historical centre of Bergen- it is lovely, still... and tourist. It is nice to take a picture of the red facades, but if you look closely at the area, you will find it is like a theatrical stage's property. There have been many fires in the former Hanseatic quarter and each time houses were renovated. Unfortunately, it is not possible to re- built the atmosphere and identity.
There are some good small restaurants, shops and galleries around, but in principle most places keep high prices and not very good service. I am not sure a common sweater with embroidered deers should cost a few hundreds euros.
If you like real old places I would recommend the quarter on the hill around St. John' s Church (Johanneskirken).
Now the local politicians consider the project for a tramway in this part of the town, and some say the new extremely expensive and absolutely unnecessary trace should pass through Bryggen... So, you have to hurry up to see this attraction before it will be winded with cables.
