“Good Location, Small Rooms, Lack of Maintance.”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

Good location near to most sights in Bergen.
Free Breakfast OK. Rooms a little small crammed.
Bathroom did not have door for shower cubicle, complaint did not help.
WiFi very weak and keeps varying in useability.
Rooms and WiFi could be better.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the waterfront near to the Fish Market is good for views.

Part of the Scandic Chain. Free stay (SAS EuroBonus points), thus got the smallest and least attractive double in the house. Bed not too bad, but little floor space. Window to unattractive, but quiet backyard. Somewhat rundown room. Greatest drawback: not a single drawer for underwear and socks. Room had a desk which was good. Very good location. Excellent breakfast. Breakfast room too small, and buffet not ideally set up. Good selection of newspapers for breakfast (biut only Norwegian ones).

Not my first choice in Bergen, then. But would not rule out coming back.

Trivia: my father has told me, that when he was a cadet at the naval academy in the sixties, this hotel was known for being the place for prostitutes. These are long gone, but the bar at the hotel doubles as the local Baker Street 221B. A local fictional detective, Varg Veum, is based here. And his statue is outside the hotel,

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a great view of the harbour, but might be noisy

Thank you for your review! We are glad to hear that you liked our excellent location by the famous Fish Market. As you mention, the hotel had a somewhat rugged reputation in the 60s. Today, however, the area is more attractive than ever with the new Food Hall just across the street. We are today known as the "Varg Veum" hotel, Gunnar Staalesens famous crime fighting hero. We recommend trying one of the special "Varg Veum" drinks in our bar Femte I Andre next time you visit us.

The hotel location opposite to the Fish Market is excellent. Our room was a reasonable size and comfortable. The ensuite was a good size. The room was at the back with an awful view - but that meant that it was quiet.

The rate included breakfast. We had to leave to catch the airport bus at 04.47 and so did not expect breakfast. However, the information in the room said that we could order a breakfast package and the receptionist said that she would ask the night porter to make sandwiches for us. He did not make any but had left bread, butter, ham and cheese for us to make our own in the dining room. We did not have time and, in any event, the porter could not provide any wrapping. There were ready made sandwiches in the shothe foyer but the porter did not have authority to give us any.

Location - It is near the fishmarket, and the wharf. Bryggen is on the other side of the water. The location is good for tourists.

Room - The room / furniture was dated with scruff marks on the wall. I think it needs to be refurbished. We found the room and bathroom to be very stuffy. After using the shower, the bathroom had a high level of condensation / humidity due to the lack of air flow. We resorted to opening the windows and the hotel room door. When we did have the door shut, we could hear the people in the corridor. Luckily there were no noisy guests during the night.

Free wireless internet was not 100% reliable as we got kicked off a few times. We just had to log back in.

Breakfast: They had the standard range of food. i.e hot food (eggs, sausages, bacon), breads, cold food - cheese, raw fish etc. We ate breakfast til the official closing time. The staff will then tell you that breakfast is closed, and that you have to leave the restaurant. We did not have that experience with the other hotels we stayed at in Norway.

Overall - Due to the presentation of the room, and the lack of air ventilation, I think it would be better to stay elsewhere. If location is the most important, then hotel is ok enough to stay at.

Thank you for your review! We understand that the air flow problem you encountered was inconvenient. Your feedback will be forwarded to our technical department for inspection.

With regards to the breakfast, we try to be flexible and accommodate guests who would like to sit a little longer to enjoy their breakfast. However, it is not always possible, especially during weekends, and in situations like this the staff will let the guests know. If you felt this was communicated in an impolite manner, we apologize for this.

We are glad to hear that you liked our location, right by the popular Fish Market. We recommend paying a visit to the newly opened Food Hall right across the street from us, if you decide to stay with us again.

I just stayed here on business. The hotel is in some ways a cut above the Norwegian average. It is not a fine hotel but everything was a bit nicer and cleaner than usual. The location cannot be beat and the breakfast good. The second floor bar is also a very nice place to sit.

Scandic Strand is in the center of Bergen and is quite easy to find.
We booked a superior bedroom at this place a few weeks ago. Our room was on the fish-market side, it was bright, big and clean - However, it was far too hot in there! We tried to turn down the heating but the thermostat did not work. We asked the receptionist if she could help us, but it was clear we were bothering her and she just said there was nothing she could do. Clearly, we did not use the duvet to sleep at night & we were still boiling!
As for the noise, the hotel itself is quiet but the windows are thin and you can hear everything from outside. At night, we heard the music from the bars + screams from drunk people - this stopped at around 4:00ish... Then, from 7:00ish, we heard an absolute awful noise coming from the fish-market - we cannot say clearly what it was. Personally, I think it was the fish-boats
unloading the fishes but I might be wrong!
Regarding the breakfast, I am glad to note that we are not the only ones who had a bad experience! We arrived at the restaurant at 10:00 and there were only a few things left. We asked for some fruits but the lady pretended she could not understand us, she took the fruit-plate to the kitchen and she never came back. After I served myself some orange juice, they closed switched off the machine so that we could not get some anymore.
If you are looking for a place in which you can rest, enjoy some great food (romantic etc.) and face some friendly staff, I would not recommend this hotel to you.
However, if you with friends and you are only looking for a place to crash a few hours as you will spend most of your time out, I suppose the Scandic Strand is the best option in terms of price.

Room Tip: I am not sure if this would make any difference but perhaps you should avoid the rooms on the fish-m...

We stayed there for one night on a Saturday night, hotel was clean and rooms not bad for the price but it was really noisy at night (and early morning!).

We were told by the receptionist that breakfast was served until 11.30 the day after which we found odd but as it was Sunday we thought that maybe they were being accomodating, we got there for 11am and the staff was taking away the food in front of us and were being rude, they even started cleaning and vacuming around us while we were having what was left of the breakfast.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel.
