Bergen is known for Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf, the Fish Market, and surrounding mountains and fjords, such as the Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. Enjoy and explore.

Bergen is blessed with a beautiful setting, natural harbour and very pretty hills. We visited from a cruise ship on a cloudy day but the weather wasn't the issue, it was the sheer number of visitors that made the day uncomfortable and hard work. The city tour we did on the double decker bus - much the same as every other such tour at cities around the world - gave us a good view around the town, but the bus schedule was so infrequent that every bus was fully to bursting and many got left behind at the stops because they couldn't take any more.

The fish market was so crowded! It was like being in a crowd at a football match, with no room to stop and have a look at the stalls. It was the same story at the widely-publicised funicular railway with the queue more than half a mile long - we passed on that and went, instead, to the Hanseatic Wharf which was quite delightful.

There were no less than four HUGE cruise ships in on the day we visited and the vast number of people disgorged from each one made Bergen, frankly, unable to cope. Nice town, but not big enough to handle the large number of visitors it gets.

There are 2 types of City sightseeing bus in Bergen both use similar signage but not sure if they are the same company.

We went on the smaller type of bus.

FIRSLTY EARPLUG TYPE EARPHONES WERE NOT REPLACED AFTER EACH PASSENGER.

The tour was very fast with the commentary coming at you nonstop, to quickly to take much in and see where you were in the city.

I have been on City sightseeing tours in many cities normally they are very good, this was definitely not.

We Cruised on the Ventura to the Fjords and Bergen was one of our stops. The ship did a trip on the Fenicular but was £36 each. I did my research before we went and found out it was only £8.68p return if you did it yourself. It was a great trip up and the views were spectacular. If I did it agaIn I would do a single up and walk back down through the forest walk. There is a cafe and a tourist shop on the top. Go early or later as it gets very busy with tours between 11am-1pm. We went up at 9.30am and there were no queues then. The fish market was a delight also. Go down the alleys between the wooden houses near the market and you can see and feel the age of the structures. A lovely City to explore.

We started the day off walking around the dock area with its Olde Wooden Structures. Sampled a little of the local cuisine such as whale and reindeer sausage. Both were quite good. Then up the funicular to view the sprawling city from above. Once up top we took advantage of the various trails leading to other vistas, olde remains, or a docile lake/pond where the canoes were free. Walked down one of the zig-zagging paths to the town where we entertained eateries and shopping. The Olde Bastion/Fortress area at the opening of the Harbour is well worth taking a stroll through. There are remnants of buildings gone, some old cannon, a wonderful church and government buildings all of the past here in a Park setting. Met some of the more pleasant trolls here too.
