I'm new to ski touring. My girlfriend and I wanted to experience the high mountains in Western Norway but we only had two days in Norway to do it. Our other goals were to see a glacier and a fjord. My guide Ole informed me that those goals are best experienced separately, skiing near the water isn't as nice due to the warm humid air that is generated by the sea. Skiing near the sea is best in there very far north of Norway. And glaciers are very remote in the southern part of Norway. Ultimately we focused on just the skiing. Ole organized two separate day tours in the Voss area. Each day we skinned from the car to the mountain ridge, then did some exploration and finally skied back to the car. On our second day we skied with a beautiful dog that lived at a local farm and makes his living showing skiers how to get to the summit and back safely in exchange for belly rubs and treats. Though we did not see fjords or glaciers from the slopes, Ole did drive me to Gudvangen to see Nærøyfjord, I appreciated the detour. Ole was knowledgable about the history of the area and most importantly about wilderness rescue based his resume of past courses. Fortunately, we never had to practice those skills. I found what he had to say about the Norwegian resistance in WWII fascinating. On our last day, my girlfriend took the train to Bergen to explore the art museums while we skied. Ole went above and beyond to drive me to Bergen to rendezvous with her. All in all it was a great experience, Ole was thurough in his planning and flexible with the plans when needed.
