It's a bit strange to begin a review by commenting on the service but it was really excellent here. We were 4 adults and made quite some special requests with the food and they agreed to everything and were extremely friendly and welcoming. All the food was cooked to perfection with a very good combination of ingredients. Standouts for us among the entrees were the halibut, the veal and the duck. Prices were quite average for Norway for food that is significantly above average - in fact, we agree this was one pf the best meals we've had in the past 5 years in Norway.

When we first checked out the menu we were not necessarily impressed. It seemed perhaps too simple, using cuts of meat we were unsure about. We tried it anyway (avoiding a town wide participation by most of the best restaurants in a prix fix wine menu). It was delicious and well worth it. Food prices in Norway are notoriously expensive, so we were not looking for bargains. If I had to comment on this and Boha (both very fine restaurants), I would say nouvelle cooking has not come to Norway. Cream and butter are abundant and everything has a sauce. That said, the cooking was superb. Wine (choose by the glass to avoid prices) was very well chosen with good choices in red and white.

Happily chanced upon this quaint restaurant as we lived in Klosterhagen, a hotel nearby. It was our last night in town and we asked the hotel staff for their recommendation. They mentioned a few and said, if you want something really special go to Spisekroken - but warned us that it may be a little expensive.

With this in mind, we did the following:

SKIPPED THE ALCOHOL - Alcohol is really pricey in Norway anyway so served in a restaurant, it would cost even more. Consider this when you eat out.

SHARED THE SET MENU - The 'degustation' menu was awesome. It had three starters, one big main, and three desserts. If you want to try different flavors, this is the way to go... it also becomes more reasonably priced if you split the food. It comes in big portions anyway. The downside of course is that you may end up wanting more of one of the good things.

ORDERED EXTRA STARTERS - Apart from one degustation menu, we also ordered an extra starter which was a very delicious trout. Keep in mind though that the specialty of the chef is veal. She has actually even wrote a recipe book all on veal. So you may want to focus on this.

The thing that surprised us the most was the pairing of very simple and fresh ingredients to come up with a taste that is interesting. This restaurant defies the concept that Norwegian food is bland. (As an aside, I have a French wife, so she is not so easy to please, food wise.)

Maybe what can be improved though is the service... there is only one server for the entire restaurant. So if you are in a rush, skip this restaurant. But I guarantee you'd stop and savor it all in when you have a nice meal here.

Loved it! Delicious food with a local twist, pleasant atmosophere. We'd asked the hotel desk attendant for a recommendation within walking distance of our hotel. He reserved our tables - otherwise we'd never have been seated. Small, family run, loved by locals & tourists alike. One of us had 2 fish starters for dinner, the other the duck entree and we both enjoyed the chocolate mousse with raspberries. Expensive, but worth it.

We went once to this restaurant, but it was so good that we wanted to go a second time, but for all three days we asked it it was already fully booked. So making reservation in advance is really needed, ànd really worth it! The prices in Bergen are all very high, but for what you get here, the prices are still reasonable. Food is very fine, very good choice, great presentation of their dishes, nice atmosphere, and nice neighbourhood, in the old part of the city. A little place to be treasured!
