Great location

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 23, 2020
Hotel is situated 2 minutes walk from the harbour. The rooms are small but excellently appointed.
Staff helpful and friendly. Good buffet breakfast.
We stayed here for one night before embarking on a Hurtigruten Cruise and the staff kindly looked after the luggage for the day. Very convenient for the funicular railway trip up the mountain.

I arrived after 9pm on the first of three nights and received a kind welcome. This was bookended when I checked out by a staff member making me a coffee while I waited for the cab they'd organised. The room was compact but cosy and well-designed with a pull-down desk below the tv (the upright panel was illustrated with Bergen info), a lounge chair and small table fitted in as well as the desk seat, fridge, safe, shelving, electric jug and two areas to hang clothes. The tv was casting-capable. Soft bed and pillows. I enjoyed the neat balcony with its views looking towards the harbour in one direction and towards Floyen in the other. The shower tended to run hot-cold-hot, I wondered if this was a Nordic thing....but didn't encounter it anywhere else....disconcerting especially when washing hair. There was no bath mat, soap was the only toiletry provided and towels were small and thin (but did the job). The included breakfast was good (except the scrambled egg had little taste). The hotel has its own bar and restaurant and is close to the harbour, fishmarket, Bryggen, shops and eateries. The funicular to Floyen is a very short walk. To the railway station it's around 10 minutes. I was a bit concerned that the luggage storage area was among the tables in the bar, but it didn't cause any problems. Overall a good experience.

We stayed two nights in a 3rd floor room, a bit "cozy" but nicely appointed. Pleasant view from our room of the harbor area. What little interaction we had with staff was efficient and pleasant.

Pros: Impeccably clean. one block from the historic harbor and fish market restaurants; room fridge, pot to make instant coffee and tea (supplies provided). Heated bath floor tiles (nice), chairs and small table, really comfortable bedding. an electrical outlet in the bed headboard, so convenient for charging devices. fold out desk with ottoman seat. Lots of options for breakfast, including 4 varieties of fish if you like that (smoked, mustard sauce, lox, pickled herring). cereals, fruits, breads, eggs, juices. WiFi included. Didn't try the bar in the lobby.

Negatives: Nothing much really. Nice hotels these days usually provide two pillows per person, but there was only one each. Only two bath towels and one hand towel. We didn't ask for more linens, but i assume they would have provided them. Shower gel dispenser in the shower (no tub) and soap dispenser by the sink were the only toiletries. No counter area at all in the bathroom, and a rather small sink, so we struggled to place our toiletries. Did I mention comfy bedding!

At about $180/night (booked on hotels.com), it's not a bargain hotel, but not much in Norway is! Glad we stayed there.

Room tip: If you want a bathtub ask for a room with one.

Today is the last day of our 3 day stay at this fantastic hotel. The staff are excellent, friendly and able to answer all questions, the room is compact but fully featured (with a fridge which has been unusual on our travels in Europe) and the service has been prompt and efficient. The bed was soft and comfy but I might have liked an extra pillow. I know if I had asked it would have been no hassles - I simply was comfortable enough so didn't bother. Our room (404) had a little balcony that you could look down to the harbour and fish market area and also up to the hills behind. With the balcony door open you can hear the noise from outside, with it closed the room is extremely quiet. Not even noise from adjoining rooms is loud enough to disturb a light sleeper like me.

The location of the Bergen Harbour Hotel is just ideal. Just a couple of hundred metres to the fish market, even less to the gondola, but in a quiet street off the main traffic flow.

The hotel has its own Cafe/Bar that offers a wide range of drinks and a few snacks. It is really nice to just sit and relax in if the rain is too hard for sightseeing. If they did real coffee this would be perfect, but even so it is still absolutely brilliant. Breakfast is served in the Soya restaurant, another aspect of the hotel. The breakfast was very good in comparison to many small hotels, possibly the best I have seen in quite a while. A range of cheeses, eggs cold and hot meats... even fresh salmon was on offer.

Before arriving at the hotel I had asked a couple of questions and got very prompt replies that were friendly and exactly what I needed to know. I was already impressed by the service before I arrived and am so glad that this level of high quality service is in all aspects of the hotel.

We primarily chose this hotel on budget, but in hindsight I would have happily paid more for the quality of stay it offers. There is nothing I can fault, not would I want to. This hotel is 100% great and I will be very happy to stay here again if back in Bergen.

If this review sounds like a bit of a rant then I plead guilty as charged. I know I am fussy and hard to please so when I find something great I am happy to recommend it to everyone. Thank you Bergen Harbour Hotel for a great relaxing stay.

Good stuff: staff are friendly and helpful with no fuss.
It’s quiet, even though our room was above the bar and the street (it may be noisier on a weekend but we are fussy about noise and this was great for us).
Breakfast is fine. A little limited by the fourth day but fresh, well topped up and they coped very well with the competition to see how many Americans you can sit for breakfast at once.
The location is perfect! Walk to anywhere or get a bus in town.

Not as good stuff: it’s not right to call this a superior king room. The bed was fine and certainly comfortable (sheets laid across as they weren’t big enough??), adequate sized room but not enough hanging space, the wet room shower doesn’t work as a concept in a hotel. You just have a permanently wet floor.

No big complaints about our stay because we really enjoyed our ourselves and this was a great place to see Bergen from. But at over £170 per night I think we deserved a bit more. Having said that the helpfulness to fix the tv connection, lend us a fan and the highly necessary loan of a brolly all added to a great 4 nights.
