Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant.

A short and cheap ferry trip from the dock area over smooth waters (when we went). Fabulous history surrounds this place everywhere you walk. It was first used in 995 by the Vikings and the Germans installed gun emplacements there during WW2. A nice place to stay for a few hours and relax or you can just go for an hour and get the the next ferry back to town.

From reading previous reviews, I think this trip/experience is what you make of it...........
For us it was a pleasant trip out (and back) with many photo opportunities, may be different on a rough day though.
It is sort of Norway's medieval version of Alcatraz - the main building has had many facets to it over the last 1000 years or so and I would highly recommend attending one of the regular tours around it and ask the guide lots of questions and you will find out a lot more about the history etc.

A good trip but your stay on the island will be dictated by weather conditions

Boat ride out was quick and the best part of the visit. I missed the earlier tours of the island on the day I visited. Make sure you check the times for these or the trip to the island is not worth it. Once there, there is a cafe, with overpriced food and a craft shop. Stayed the hour until the next boat arrived with more visitors. It sounds better reading about this island from the trip advisor than it is in real life. More impressive from a far than on it!

We visit Munkholmen regularly esp during the summer time. We kayak there, drink a coffee and eat a fresh baked waffle and then we paddle back. A ferry connects Munkholmen with Trondheim in the summer time.
A lot of Norwegians like to take a bath when the weather is warm enough.
