“THE hotel to stay at in Trondheim”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Look no further. This is the place to stay. In the heart of Trondheim right next to the Blomsterbrua (Flower Bridge) and an easy walk to the Fish Market and shopping at Solsiden.

The hotel is new and clean, but the best parts are the friendly staff and the convenient location. Oh. And the breakfast.

The breakfast is the best in all of Norway and I've never seen its match in any of my travels. There is an entire section of only fish--smoked fish from different areas of Norway. Another section for meats and cheese, another section for patisserie, another for freshly baked bread, another for fruits and yogurts, and still another for coffee, lattes, and tea (complete with your own barista). Set in a pleasant environment with friendly staff who will serve your coffee and juice, it was just a spectacular experience.

The hotel is centrally located and is within walking distance of my favorite restaurant/market in all of Norway--the Ravnkloa. It is a fresh fish market where you can buy fish, but you can also sit outside and order from the menu. Bacalao is a Norwegian specialty that you CANNOT miss. It is a red stew with potatoes, olives, and cod. Trust me on this. The restaurant is only open in the summer, so hopefully you are lucky enough to be traveling then.

Solsiden is a shopping area with restaurants and cafes. There is a jazz club that is my husband's favorite (he lived in the area for many years) and a coffee house called Choco Boco that is mine. Do not miss the fresh hot chocolate made with chocolate shavings and hot milk.

Also within walking distance is Nidarosdomen, a cathedral that should not be missed. Also, the king's summer palace is nearby.

There is so much to see and this hotel provides access to it all. They also provide free bike rentals.

There is one drawback to this hotel--there is no parking on the hotel grounds. You must park at a public parking place two blocks away. For me, that is a big drawback, but the many benefits of this hotel more than made up for it.

Room Tip: Pro tip: Eat a light dinner the night before, so that you are hungry enough to enjoy the morning'...

The Rica Nidelven hotel is only 5 mins. walk from Trondheim centre and yet gives easy access onto the main highway going North and South. It is a modern hotel with a bright and pleasing entrance and well appointed bedrooms most of which overlook the river on which it is built. While writing the dining/breakfast room was being upgraded. There is a large lounge/bar with experienced bar staff who will prepare any drink you can name. Slight downside is the car park which is remote from the hotel although access is permitted onto the forecourt. I actually parked there overnight without any problem but space is limited. Disabled parking is available on forecourt. If you arrive by boat you can moor at the side of the hotel and access from their pontoons. Good lift access to all floors. Not the cheapest of hotels but good quality and value for money with efficient and knowledgable staff on reception.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the river.

It is true this is one of the best breakfast you can have. The hotel serves a lot of local and seasonal food. However, it always disappoints me a hotel that says it is green and cannot meet its promises. I hanged up twice the twoles in the hope I could use them again in the following day. The room service have changed the towels and the reason for the bad note on services.

We stayed here for three nights in July, and found the staff to be very helpful and friendly, both prior to our arrival and during our stay. The two rooms we had were of good size, clean and both with a nice sea view.
For a longer stay, we did find it a bit inconvenient to have to go to the basement to iron our clothes, and we missed a bedside table and electric sockets as only one side of the bed offered this.

The hotel does not offer any parking, so we had to look for street parking or park in a parking garage nearby (which added a bit of parking costs to our stay here).
But the location of the hotel is great, close to the train station, and close to most of the sights and shopping that you'd want to see and do downtown.

Unfortunately, we were met with a poster saying that their famous "Norway's best hotel breakfast" would not be served during our stay, (or for most of July), due to renovation of the restaurant area. We got breakfast, but more on an average hotel breakfast level. The promise of a fantastic breakfast was our main reason for choosing this hotel, and we were quite disappointed by this news, especially since there had been no warning of this when we booked our rooms, but we have been compensated by the hotel for this, and all in all we had a very positive experience staying at this hotel.

Stayed here for a night on the dock in Trondheim. Got a great room with a view over the seaside and the room was clean and modern. Had looked forward to the much discussed breakfast and was welcomed by the hostess when me entered the large breakfast room. There where different sections for smoothies, meat, fish and cheese. A chef or a waitress standing behind, gladly telling where and how the food was made. Everything tasted delicious.

I was visiting at NTNU for a couple of days and stayed at Rica Nidelven. It is nice modern hotel, well located close to the city centre, the harbor and the train/bus station.
The breakfast was really excellent, with a wide selection, which also included local produces.

This is a very good hotel with a very friendly staff and an excellent breakfast buffet. Despite its location at the edge of the downtown, it is still conveniently located within walking distances from all places to visit. They even provide bicycles for touring the city.

Room Tip: Try to avoid rooms along the rail/road line on the North side.
