Owner description: Nidaros Cathedral is the national sanctuary of Norway. Work began in 1070, and the building was completed in about 1300. After being damaged by fire, it lay largely in ruins for several hundred years. In 1869 extensive restorations were begun, and a century later the cathedral was again restored to its original grandeur.

We just went to a concert with the cathedrals own girls choir. The atmosphere and the sound are just amazing. The cathedral has wonderful windows and during the summer time you can even climb up to one of the towers and enjoy an astonishing view over the tops of Trondheim. The park of the cathedral invites to a walk.

Impressive building surrounded by a small park and museum. During the night is very nicely illuminated. You have to buy a ticket to go inside. Also you can by additional ticket to go to the tower which offers wonderful views on the city.

The cathedral, which dates to the middle ages is nicely restored and represents gothic and roman architectural styling. The outside is not especially special. The inside may be moreso, but as a working church, entry was not readily available.

Even if it was a short visit, and the weather was turning bad, it was worth every minute. The cathedral is monumental and spectacular, inside and out. Gives a pretty good idea of the epochs it represents. I regret only that I did not have the opportunity to hear the organs. A sure target for my next visit to Trondheim.

Trondheim is one of the longer stops on the Hurtigruten voyage, so you have time for a reasonable walk round the town. The Cathedral is easily seen from anywhere in the city and is worth a visit. It's a fine example of gothic architecture, though probably simpler on the inside and smaller than most cathedrals throughout Europe. The guides are helpful and engaging.

After the visit, cross the Old Town Bridge, over river Nidelva, and into Bakklandet to enjoy fine views of the distinctive wharves built along the river's edge.
