This is the restaurant of the Hotel Rica Bakklaret and the hotel is simply excellent, as we have reported elsewhere. We chose to eat in the restaurant on the first of our four nights in Trondheim, on the strength of the exceptionally good reports in Trip Advisor from others. The restaurant is on the ground floor, with a superb view of the river and the old warehouses along its banks, from the enormous glass wall along one side. The service was impeccable. We both chose a different main course. Mine was baked hake, a delicious, delicately- flavoured fish. Unfortunately, it arrived smothered in a large pile of roasted almonds that was almost as large as the piece of fish itself, and these turned out to be salty to the point that they completely masked the taste of the fish. I did report this to them waitress, who apologised and said she would inform the chef, but that was the last I heard of it. My partner had better luck with a lamb dish, though it was not an especially memorable one given the accolades that this restaurant has been receiving. The lamb was much firmer than expected and was accompanied by a lot of beans in a reasonably tasty but unexceptional manner. Neither of us claims to be an expert gourmet but we do eat out a lot and have done so for the last two weeks in four Norwegian cities and this was easily the most disappointing meal of our visit, as well as being an expensive one. Hopefully, the kitchen was just having a bad night?
