Radisson Blu Royal Garden Hotel, Trondheim
Ranked #5 of 24 Hotels in Trondheim
Reviewed September 30, 2011

One of those hotels that used to really trendy and nice, and was very popular. Now it's starting to show, and it looks a little tired both in and out, though it is still well maintained. Great restaurants, but tired conference facilities. They appear to be rotating their furniture as some chairs are threadbare and worn, while other conference rooms and lobbies have new and comfortable chairs.
Best location in the city hands down.
Most visitors from other countries experience Norwegian service sector employees as polite, but not exactly helpful. Reception in this hotel is no exception, I found it standard or better than average for this country, though an outsider might think it rather rude if they are unfamiliar with the Norwegian service culture.

Room Tip: The whole building is encased in a glass shell so there really isn't an issue with traffic noise...

Very nicely and centraly situated in Trondheim, close to the cathedral and old city. The Airport coaches stops outside main entrance. Good swimming pool and business facilities. The hotel works well for holiday and business!

This ought to be a really splendid hotel and on entering one cannot but be struck by the sheer spaciousness of the ground floor reception, lounge and circulation areas. This is an attractive feature so often lacking in modern hotels. However, the bedrooms are small, the majority have only windows looking onto the attractive atrium and are without any opening windows. This means that the temperature control system appears to struggle in warm weather and, in our experience, these rooms are airless and too hot. The reception staff are clearly aware of this problem and attempt to fulfil the Radisson promise of 100% guest satisfaction but by far the majority of the rooms are inward looking so there is only so much they can do. The pleasant and good sized swimming pool has an unusual feature – a glass roof to one of the atria where bathers can be viewed.
The breakfast room is large and forms the ground floor of yet another atrium. Breakfast itself is splendid with all the usual fare including a large selection of different, freshly baked breads. A good breakfast is welcome when all food in Norway is so expensive. Evening dining is restricted to the small area around the bar as it is apparently little called for. Our dinner was however, freshly cooked, good and of ample quantity albeit from a very small menu.
The hotel is well situated being both waterside and with easy access to the city and its magnificent cathedral. For music lovers across the road is the concert hall which itself is integral with a small shopping centre. An interesting hotel in spite of its problems.

I have stayed here a few times on business trips.

The rooms are spacious but haven't been refurbished in a while. Cracked tiles and worn down wooden floors and carpets are the norm. The rooms are clean despite the wear and tear.

The breakfast buffet is good.

The are located in central Trondheim and there's a bus taking you too and from the airport that stops right outside the hotel.

The best aspects of this hotel is its location and its architecture. However, the front desk is snooty and rude. This is not a single, once-in-a-way experience. We wrote immediately to the Manager the second time and have not heard anything in response so far. Breakfast is good experience, by the river Nid. Rooms are fina, neat and clean, with not much space. However, the corridors are spacy and in some ways, make up for the miserliness of space in the room.

Despite all the pluses this place has to offer, we will not be staying here again purely due to the shockingly unpleasant experiences at the front desk.

Room Tip: Stay at another place. There are many hotels to choose from in Trondheim.

I stayed here for one night on business in a junior suite, which was the only room available, given a big fishing conference that was going on. The room was split level with a sofa, table etc downstairs and twin beds and a bathroom upstairs.
I thought it was very comfortable, with a few touches for the business traveller - for example, a small iron and ironing board set onto the wall ,which was very helpful.
Breakfast was good with plenty of choice, but there did not seem to be much in the way of evening meals available, other than bar snacks.
Overall,a very pleasant place to stay - I did get woken up by a number of conference delegates singing very loudly in the next room at 3am, but that was not the fault of the hotel !

The worst in this hotel is the staff in reception. They have an attitude unpleasant and snooty with the guests. We tried with three different people and they had the same attitude.
The hotel is a four starts that needs to be updated. Breakfast is not as healthy as they offer in other Radisson. Well located close to a new area of restaurants and city center.
