Location is excellent, rooms are small but well appointed, we had a fantastic view to the North. Some rooms look at a wall, very few look out on the historic area and water. Buses, including an express to the airport, leave right out front. Breakfast is excellent, combining the many varieties of fish, with eggs, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, cereals, breads, anything you could want basically. The breakfast room is stunning with a 3 (?) story glass front looking at historic warehouses on the waterfront. The major sites are in walking distance and 2 supermarkets are within a block. We booked months in advance and got a reasonable rate. When we looked closer to the arrival date, the price had doubled. Staff are super friendly and the place is very clean.

The overall service was great, the breakfast outstanding! Staff made dinner reservations for us when we couldn't . Location wonderful, we walked everywhere, waterfront, cathedral, small shops in old town, grocery store. Our only complaint was the lack of practical priced parking, but understand this is a problem for all of Trondheim. The free bike rental was also a big hit with our group (3 out of 4 used them!) Several families were staying and no room to room noise. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed in early July 2014 and found the hotel to be of a very good standard. You can park in the car park underneath the hotel but it isn't cheap 350NK for two days.

Rooms are modern with no views whatsoever in our case or the hotel might have got an excellent rating. Breakfast was of a high standard.

The location is ideal for either the historic part of Trondheim or for riverside walks. The new quay development is nearby for a choice of dining at reasonable Norway prices.

Yes we would use this hotel again. Staff weren't the friendliest we can across on our trip but were businesslike.

We found it worth the few extra hundreds kronors for superior room with view and French balcony overlooking the river. Especially nice on a sunny +25C evening. Good location close to city centre, historic sights as well as Solsidan restaurant mall. Great breakfast too and kept both buffet refilled and tables fresh and clean.
Friendly and service minded staff, helpful with recommendations to restaurants and excursion suggestions. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again at our next visit in Trondheim.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a superior room and ask for river view.

We arrived very early in morning and they helpfully found a room for us by 11am.On the other hand we wouldn't have been happy with the room in normal circumstances.Very small and only a skylight for natural light.Good bathroom.Excellently situated for the city centre and very good breakfast.Free bike available for guests.

Room Tip: ask for room with a window and not just a skylight.

This is the 6th place we have stayed at during our trip to Norway -- including a youth hostel, camping cabins, and nice hotels (including another Rica, the Holmenkollen Park hotel in Oslo), and, despite being one of the most expensive (especially with 175 NOK parking), so far the Rica Bakklandet has been the worst. We just arrived only about an hour ago, but the first thing we experienced (aside from the expensive -- and nearly full -- parking garage) was coming to the reception counter to check in, and we were told the room was still not ready -- at 17:00 (5 pm). This seems a bit late in the day for a room not to be clean, especially one that has been reserved for over 6 months now, so it's not like a sudden surprise that we were coming.

The receptionist told us to take a seat in the lobby/bar area and they would inform us when the room was finished being cleaned, and that we could have a coffee or tea while we were waiting. I do not know how we were to get that coffee or tea -- I did not see any available, and nobody offered any to us as we sat there.

And we sat there for 35 minutes, waiting and waiting with no response, until finally we saw another couple come in to check in at the counter, and they were given a room number 2 or 3 rooms down from us -- yet they were told they were ready to check in, no problem, no waiting. So then I decided to finally go up to the counter and inquire about the room again -- she did not remember our room number, and when I reminded her, she said "oh, we are running slow today, I don't think it is ready, let me check", and made a phone call (which was not answered by whomever she was calling.) Then someone showed up and she said "Yes, sorry, the room actually is ready now. You may go up..."

So we did, but the room is not completely clean. There are dirt and crumbs all over the floor, smudge marks on the side of the bed, something brown caked on the bedspread/cover, and more crumbs and something sticky on the bedside table [see photos]

This was the ONLY hotel in Norway which I booked for more than one night, and I now regret that I did so. This kind of service does not deserve a #1 rating on TripAdvisor...

Trondheim was our first stay in Norway last February. The Rica Bakklandet was a great place to start out. The hotel was comfortable, and the views from our room were gorgeous. The location was excellent, allowing us to walk everywhere, and the staff helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet was absolutely amazing, and we couldn't help trying everything, resulting in our not needing to eat again until evening, which was a decided advantage, given Norway prices. Every Rica hotel we stayed in outshone the other hotels we tried in Norway--worth the cost.
