This international modern art collection is housed in a beautiful building in Aker Brygge. It is certainly eclectic with works by RB Kitaj, Damien Hirst and David Hockney & combines paintings, sculpture and installations. The views from the museum are fantastic and add to the experience of visiting.

At first the architecture of this museum is spectacular - but so is it's own collection and certainly the museum's current outreach. It's current contemporary African art exhibition is as surprising as it is ambitious, humanistic, energegic and creative. With artist like Chéri Samba, Amadou Sanogo,JP Mika,Houston Maludi, Fabrice Monteiro and Omar Victor Diep, the museum casts a long, outstanding beam of artistic courageous samples from a continent, probably unknown too most Scandinavians (including me, I must confess). Here lies a potential, that the museums curator should be applauded for inviting into the center of Oslo. The permanent art exhibition displays controversial Damien Hirst, Alex Israel, David Hockey and ain many ways grotesque porcelain sample of Michael Jackson and Bubbles. Absolutely worth experiencing.

Though being surprisingly small, the museum is intriguing with a pretty souvenir store. Worth seeing for everyone interested in art and worth walking around it to get to a small public beach. You should also consider looking for the rest of the small art galleries scattered around the museum.

As with all art.. it’s personal. We all come from different backgrounds and cultures. There were many exhibits that did appeal and one or two that captured our hearts. Equally We found some of it distasteful and even upsetting. Im not naive to understand that this is the idea .. to evoke emotion.
However .. as we went to walk into the second gallery the expressions were not art. They found hard to stomach. We didn’t venture any further. I wonder whether maybe even art needs age rating and content advisory.

We visited the gallery as we had time to kill before going on the Oslo fjord cruise. We were pleasantly surprised by the breadth of modern artwork - Damian hurst, David Hockney - and the Gilbert and George exhibition. One of the best 90 minutes of our weekend!
Stunning galleries set in an equally stunning setting right at the end of the pier.
