I love fish, so I've been in quite a few good restaurants, but Vulkanfisk is something else. It's not really a restaurant, more like a fish cafe where you can have excellent lunch or dinner with your friends or family.
You have the choice between sushi, made by the masfer chef Rafik, my god he's GOOD! And the special red sauce they give you with the sashimi is just AMAZING!
The warm food from the kitchen changes with what they have in the fish disk (I went here quit a few times when I was visiting Oslo), but they always have the fish and chips though.
I tried the whale, I know, poor wale, but Øyvind, one of the owners of Vulkanfisk told me how and why and everything about the whale
Meat so I felt a little less guilty eating it. My god that was delicious, like beef meet!
One of the other days I ate mussels with a spicy sauce, I live in France, but these are the best mussels I have ever eaten!
The service is good, especially by the dark haired lady, didn't catch her name though, but she was very positive and talkative with all the guests.
So all in all I had a great evening withy friend and when the bill came I was surprised that it didn't cost more!
Thank you so much Vulkanfisk, for an unforgettable food and service!
I will and already have recommended you to many friends!
Keep up with the good work!
Excellent service and wine, but what about the food? The kids enjoyed the fish n chips made from atlantic cod. We shared four oysters from France, but only one in four was very good, the other had a bit of a metallic taste. Fish of the day was halibut which was ok, maybe a bit dry. My wife's first choice of scallops was sold out and she had lobster instead. Ok, but she was a bit disappointed. All of us enjoyed the aioli the most, and we bought a pack with us home.
VulkanFisk is in Mathallen, a food court located in a former industrial building in the Vulkan district. There's quite a variety of different delis and restaurants there.
VulkanFisk itself has two counters, one serving sushi and the other serving cooked fish. You can either sit around the counter or at a few tables nearby. The staff are friendly and helpful.
The food is prepared in front of you, to order. I chose the fish and chips, which were crispy and delicious. They even had malt vinegar to go with them. There's a selection of beers and wines to go with the food and the prices are reasonable by Oslo standards.
