If you want to do as the Norwegians in the summer, go to one of the rocky beaches by the fjord only 10 minutes away from the city center by bus! Its clean water for swimming, and easily accessable with bus nr. 30 to "Bygdoy" (take it to the last stop). Everyone visiting Oslo thinks food is expensive- the best way is to bring it yourself. At the supermarket in town buy either a "one time bbq" which can be disposed after use and hotdogs/burgers, or buy fresh/frozen shrips, baguettes and curd. Jump on the bus and select between 3-4 different beaches, some more packed than others. If you go to the left you will find the most popular with a restaurant, and fine sand beach. But also packed. Go to the right through the woods and you come to a deserted rocky shore. Not so nice for swimming, but nice for a picnic away fromt he crowd! the best beach is "paradisbukta" - just follow the rocky beach for a couple hundred meters to the right, or the path through the woods- also a nice walk. the sand beach is packed with kids, but if you continue on the rocks, you will find many nice hidden spots, either for watching sunset, bbq or swimming.
