“Unbeatable location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

Location: Extremely convenient -it's right next to the Central Station that has the airport express taking you to the airport in 20 minutes. It's also where you can hop on a bus to almost anywhere you'll need to go in the city. Plenty of food options available at night too, which helped on our first night because we arrived pretty late and were hungry. Only slight issue was that roaming around at night might be a bit of an issue for some, as Karl Johan's Gate (the main street across the hotel) sees plenty of vagabonds at night (spillovers from the Central Station).

Room: We had 2 vastly different rooms. One was tiny and the other was a massive corner room, for our family of 5. Both rooms were sufficiently equipped though, and we didn't really mind the small room. However, views were highly obstructed (massive sheet metal panel right outside the window and windows don't open more than a half a foot) and there wasn't an electric kettle provided (though this was resolved by providing complimentary coffee and tea in the lobby).

Service: Excellent service provided, and rectification was quick whenever we had issues (e.g. initial corner room did not cater for 3 pax as requested, and housekeeping had gone off for the day). Knowledgeable front desk was able to provide concise information when requested, which was much appreciated when we were on a tight schedule.

Others: Breakfast was comprehensive and satisfying. Gym was fairly well equipped and sufficient for the usual travel workout.

Overall a pleasant experience. I would mainly recommend this hotel for it's great value-for-money.

We stayed 2 nights in a double room and it was excellent. It is a short walk from the Airport Express though the entrance is hard to find in the first instance. Rooms are decorated in minimalist Scandinavian style but that does not detract from the central location and general comfort of the rooms. We had a room on the third floor over looking Karl Johan's gate and loved it in terms of comfort of bed and cleanliness of rooms. It is not 5 star and I think that adds to its functional charm and it can't be beaten on price in Oslo which is generally an expensive city - we have stayed at the Westin Elements in NY and it's very similar. Only negative is that the bathroom is very large but short on storage space for toiletries etc. A small thing in an exceptional hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a double room and one looking out onto Karl Johan's gate

Firstly, this was not the hotel we had booked. We got a taxi from Central Station to the Comfort Hotel Express - only to find a sign saying it was closed for the Christmas holidays! So we took the hotel back to the station and the Grand Central. But this meant we probably had an even better time!

The hotel is in a great location, right next to the station (yet quiet), walking distance to almost all the main central Oslo sights. It's also right next to one of the main tram, bus and tube stops, from where you can go to practically anywhere in Oslo!

The breakfast was delicious, from the variety of cold meats, fish and vegetables on offer, through the delicious crispy bacon, scrambled eggs and baked tomatoes (missing them already) to the variety of fresh fruit, cereals, bread, jams, croissants, coffee, juice etc on offer. Filling up in the morning on a three course breakfast invariably meant that we didn't need to eat anything until the evening.

The room was clean, cosy and comfortable (if a little on the small side, with all our bags!) and the underfloor heating in the bathroom was wonderful.

All of this would have been great and would have meant that we would have had a good Christmas holiday in a clean, central, good hotel. However, what meant that we had an unforgettable Christmas was the staff. They were not only helpful but also very friendly. A huge thank you to everyone then, particularly Freddy, Emelie, Erica and Sanny. Thanks for giving us a Christmas to remember! And hope you have a Happy New Year!

Norway Oslo Comfort Hotel Grand Central

We arrived in Dec and stayed for two nights.

Just be prepared to get a little confused with finding the entrance. At the time of our visit, there was quite a bit of construction going on around the area (but did not affect our stay in the hotel) so we ended having to get outside the station inorder to look for it.

We got lost trying to find the hotel and eventually realised there were two ways to get to the hotel from the outside of the station. I have posted some pics of these exits. We arrived on 8th Dec 2013 so I am unsure if the directions will change in time to come.

VIA KARL JOHANS GATE
When you arrive at the train station, head for the KARL JOHANS Gate. Once you see the overhead sign “Karl Johans gate Jernbanetorget” and Post office (see photo), go down the escalator and head out the exit doors.

Once outside, walk a few metres and you will see a short flight of steps on your left.

Go down those flight of steps and you will see the hotel on your left. Its a nice "historical" 3 storey beige building (the Comfort Hotel Grand Central sign can be see on top of this building). I believe there should be a black stone statue outside the building.

The entrance is via the side door of the Italian Restaurant “Bella Bambina”. You may need to peek into one of the doors in front of the building. (see pic)

Walk right in and through the restaurant. Once you spot the kitchen, turn left into the lift area and you will spot the reception desk. The reception looks like a cashier counter with some drinks on the shelves and you will also see the lobby area with chairs and tables too.

OR VIA THE SOUTH EXIT
Once you see the EXIT SOUTH, go out of the station using large revolving door.

Go down the stairs on the right. Walk a little and the hotel’s beige building is on your right.
You may not spot the doorentrance till you walk a few metres more. Remember not to get confused with another Comfort Hotel that is much further away.

I am not sure but I think it was because of the construction going on inside the train station and so we could not get to the hotel from inside the train station.

Check in was a breeze and the reception staff was always friendly, helpful and cheerful.

Our room 420 looked out into the square and streets which were nicely lighted up in Dec. It was only a short distance to the lifts.Very pleased with the room (with the exception of the mural of a matador with a hairy crotch. LOL!). In case you are looking for the thermostat, its on the same wall as the mural. Had a very good sleep on the comfortable beds.

Coming from beautiful Tromso and breathtaking natural scenery in Lauklines, this modern art is not quite our cup of tea. But the rest of the hotel is very nice and definitely worth staying.

No fridge or safe in the rooms.
Wifi was fast and good.

Bathroom is pretty spacious but the shower area is not entirely closed off - so we had to be careful when showering so as not to wet the other side of the floor. Housekeeping should provide a floor towel so we can dry our feet when getting out of the shower area. Shampoo and soap & a toothbrush were supplied.

Oh yes - do remember to ensure your door is locked when you leave the room (double check the door handle) They were times we thought it was locked when it wasn’t. I believe we need to tap the key card again - was a little confusing at times.

We were very impressed with the excellent quality breakfast spread in the italian restaurant. Also Lovely ambience with restful jazz, bosa nova background music. Nice!

We also tried their restaurant triple special for dinner - at NOK 195. This comes with a starter, main and dessert of the day - they are served all at once and portions were just nice for us.
We ate here on both nights as the restaurants across the street didn’t seem interesting enough for us.

There is free coffee and a selection of tea in the hotel reception sitting area - ask for milk from the staff if you need it for your coffee. Sitting at the lobby looking out through the large windows - snowflakes falling, dusting the landscape - such a pretty white wintry scene - rather restful and relaxing.

It wasn't crowded during our stay. Hence, the reception area is very conducive for working on your laptop or reading etc. provided the music overhead is kept to a minimal volume. Would have preferred instrumental instead of pulsating pop vocals for a more conducive reading environment. This is the only negative for us. Otherwise everything was more than satisfactory.

We will definitely recommend this hotel.

You are in the middle of town, more or less on top of the central station with the trains and airport express train only a few minutes away. But not the most quiet location, small bed (narrow) and a bit firm, simple bathroom, it works if you don't need luxury. Quite good breakfast.

Stayed here for 6 nights. Great room with contemporary decor and a spacious bathroom. We looked out over the square and directly up Karl Johans Gate resplendent with Christmas lights. Extremely friendly and helpful reception staff. Go and look at the Ironing Room with its funky spaceship design.
Breakfast buffet was good, best get there before the crowds otherwise you'll have to queue for the coffee machine.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. At first, we were given a double room with stairs inside, bed at the cockloft. Since my wife is pregnant, we requested to change the room. The staff was very helpful to find a room at the same floor immediately for us to switch to. Travelers may need to pay attention that they have several kinds of double room, some are quite far from entrance, and need to change lifts to that particular floor.
Other than this, room was clean and nice, though not particularly spacious.
