“Correct hotel for a business trip”
Reviewed September 14, 2010

I stayed in the hotel for a full week for business reasons. The hotel is located very closed to Skoyen Station, which has very good connection with train/tram with Oslo CentralStation and Oslo airport with FlytoGet.

Rooms are austere but clean. Probably the best of the hotel is the free wireless internet connection, it really makes a difference. Staff are polite and willing to help. Breakfast is quite complete. In summary, a good stay overall.

If you are staying for business in Skoyen area, this is definitely a good option. However, I would not recommended it for tourists visiting Oslo, probably a more charming hotel downtown is better in that case.

The hotel is just a few minutes by train from Oslo S and was ideally situated for the office that I was working from. Not ideal for tourists as it is a little bit out of the way. I stayed at this hotel for over a year so it really did become a home from home.

The hotel restaurant menu is small but the food quite tasty. The breakfasts are extensive and the cost is included in the room rate.

Rooms are clean and staff are friendly. Bathrooms are functional with under floor heating. A good range of TV channels to choose from and wireless internet is provided free of charge.

Only downside is that restaurant is not open in an evening on weekends, however there are a couple of pizza and pasta places down the road, as well as 2 super markets within walking distance.

If you are a regular traveller, it is worth signing up to the hotel loyalty scheme that gives you vouchers to use in the hotel shop and on food in the hotel.

Service - At check in was very frosty. The receptionist looked at me in shock when I asked to be booked in, as if the hotel was fully booked and I should know this. I insisted I had a booking. Reluctantly the (i thought rather haughty) receptionist looked me up in her system, and lo and behold I had a room. Barely a smile.

The room itself was awful, worn and in need of serious investment. Bed had clean but threadbare sheets (really nothing you'd keep in your own home) , and cheap duvet ( 2 single duvets on a double bed). There was a fridge...however this was switched off and empty...smelled a bit.

No room service at all. Tea/coffee and tiny kettle in room.
There is a pizza joint below the hotel....you can smell it all the way upstsairs. So if you're happy after a long day at work to go source your own food you can do that. There is a restaurant in the Hotel also (but closes early). If you arrive in at 10pm your pretty stuck but there is a tiny selection of cold food ( they had some apples, pasta salad and sandwiches for sale in hotel lobby and basic choc bars).

The bathroom made me think the hotel was designed for monks. No towel bigger than a teatowel (no joke) and threadbare..barely did the job and you need several after a shower. Room had a shower only (kind where the water runs onto floor and across bathroom).

No conditioner, just a bulk shampoo tank on the wall (reminded me of handsoap at school)..

No airconditioner - room was extremely hot so I slept with window wide open..so noisy.

Bed narrow but comfortable enough , though not in keeping with the £180 pounds a night bill..

Room clean, but the state of general wear and neglect leaves you feeling it is dirty.

I tryed to iron my suit trousers using the contraption on the wall...I think this is asafety hazard as collapsed on me twice whilst holding a hot iron...could be easy to get hurt I think. I gave upon it and went to work with crumpled pants..better safe than sorry!

Hallways scuffed, worn and tired, there seemed to be a permanent pile of carts full of linen parked by the lifts in each level (adds to run down and functional feel). This hotel seems to be set up to make it easy for the staff...rather then to make the customers experience a great one.

On the positive side, its in a business district..a lot of companies have offices nearby and this is the only reason why I can imagine people go there.
Also the night staff (Particularily one gent) always had a smile and seemed genuinely eager to help despite the poor material he had to work with. Scandic should reward him, as he is a gem and must deal with constant customer complaints, yet still is smiling.

Real shame, needs a good refurb and rethink.

This is a budget hotel located a bit outside of Oslo city center. There is a train station close by that will bring you right into the center of Oslo for around 50 NOK. It’s not much to do close by, but there are some shops and restaurants. We spent two nights there in combination with our wedding. This is not the type of hotel you typically would pick for your wedding night, but since all our friends and family were staying at the same hotel because of the proximity to the wedding party we decided to stay here as well. The staff is friendly and the hotel feels quite new and fresh, but it’s nothing near upscale. A small note or surprise given it was our wedding night and we brought over 20 persons with us would have been nice (they were given notice) Also my wife forgot her phone when we left the room the last day and when we called 3 hours later they said it was not there. I will not go as far as blaming anyone from the staff for stealing it, but since no other guests had checked in and only the staff/cleaning people had access to the room after we left it there I find it really strange that it was not found where we left it.

When I had breakfast the first morning it was crazy there with what felt like 1 million Spanish tourists.. Almost no food left and people standing eating everywhere since there were no available tables or seats. We got a tip to wait until after 9 before eating breakfast because then the tourist buses would have left and when we got to the restaurant to have breakfast the next day at 9.30 it was very quiet and a nice selection of food.

All in all I can recommend this hotel. It’s walking distance to a lot of museums (Norwegian folk museum, Viking museum etc.) and a short train trip into central Oslo. It feels fresh, but the smaller incidents described above makes me hold back on the highest rating.

I have stayed at the Scandic Sjolyst - more out of Hobson's choice. But I haven't ever regretted. They are quite courteous and amicable folks.

The challenge is that they don't have a gym. They offer you complimentary access to a private gym, but there are time windows which do not make them practical. Scandic offers you complimentary internet access, which makes them particularly a business traveler comfortable to work beyond office hours, or work from the hotel room if required. The restaurant and bar are small but nice and warm.

There are retailers right across the street, making it convenient just in case you need to. You can also dine out. While there isn't anything particularly significant, I used to end up having a pizza at Dolly Dimples - adjoining the Scandic property - if I am returning late from work.

In Oslo, over a weekend for business. Tough town to find something to fit the budget, but this hotel delivered.
Not centrally located, but well connected to airport and centre of town.
Staff was welcoming and helpful. Rooms, clean and like a previous review stated, heated bathroom floors a nice touch. Free internet and a big breakfast made the rainy weekend a bit more bearable.
Hotel was fully booked with tour groups during the weekend, yet this put no strain on staff or services.
I would stay here again, and recommend to friends.

We stayed for four nights at this hotel and it is not what we expected!
Room was spacious but badly in need for renovation. When we've arrived first night room looked like it wasn't cleaned for a long time.It was dusty and our sheets were filthy.
Bathroom was terrible. Lawatory was rusty and when you take a shower the whole bathroom gets flooded . Cleanliness is something they need to work with (even clean towels had some strange spots on it!).
Breakfast was good,standard scandinavian.
Hotel is not central but very well conected, tram, bus and train very close by, about 10 minutes to the centre.
From Scandic I expected more!
