I spent one night in Thon Hotel Astoria. The check-in was swift and friendly, the room was nicely decorated and compact (in fact minuscule), but I wasn't planning any dancing anyway, and the location two steps away from Oslo's main street superb. You do get a lot for your money! Leaving at 4am, I had no time for breakfast. I consider the Thon Astoria an excellent option for an Oslo stay.

I had a series of meetings in downtown Oslo recently and, knowing I wouldn't be spending much time in my hotel room, I found the Thon Hotel Astoria well placed and adequate for purposes. The rooms are small and very basic, but covering the basics well. I had a single room and the bed reminded me of a small boat bed - narrow but comfortable with a well-positioned reading light. Desk, TV, a few shelves and a small but nice bathroom made up the accommodations. No closet in the room but a long peg w. hangers. No safe, but you can check your valuables at the front desk. Breakfast was terrific and if you are going to be touring central Oslo this is a good location. A five minute walk from Central Station. I wouldn't stay here with my wife (I'd probably go a few blocks west to the Thon Hotel Opera) or if I was going to spend a lot of time in my room but for my purposes it was fine.

Room Tip: I thing a room overlooking the street would be better than one in the interior

This hotel is part of a larger chain in Norway. When we booked it was unaware it was BUDGET version. AND that it was .... budget. While being in a fairly good location to walk, but it was certainly not special. ALSO was told that there was plenty of parking. Well, there is but AT YOUR COST. AND cost in Oslo is staggering. The hotel staff were very nice and even helpful. The included breakfast buffet was quite nice. Being a smoker, there has been no attempt to provide for smokers OUTSIDE in rain or inclement weather. Not the hotel´s fault, but the major construction and updating in Oslo includes the street where the hotel is located. WE had an "inside" room with two door that opened for ventilation. It was quiet. It had 24/7 coffee tea machine in the lobby. AND it does have free internet connection which was stable.
.

Room Tip: For a view, ask for one that faces onto the street. We viewed inside where four buildings met.

The hotel is in the city center, very close to the Cathedral. Location is fine for tourism although it may be noisy at night: there's a night club in the area and there was street noise.

The bedroom was pretty small but confortable and clean. Nice buffet breakfast. Unhelpful staff.

Stayed for one night, and chose due to its location. It is close to Oslo Central station, and near the city centre. There was construction work occurring on one of the buildings across the street. It only made walking along the street a bit dusty. There was no issue with the noise from the construction.

The bed was very soft in comparison to the other Scandinavian hotels we stayed at. The bathroom was bigger as we were in the room next to the fire exit. The bathroom is a long rectangle shape, with the toilet the back. Then have a sink, and the shower. The shower is a curtain only, so this makes the bathroom feel bigger in comparison. We found the room to be stuffy so opened the windows to get some fresh air.

Breakfast was ok. We had breakfast about 1 hour before the closing time. There was limited range of food, as they do not replenish the stock (hot food / fresh food) unless there are enough people still eating, and all of that dish is finished. For example, if only one sausage left, they will not add more food, unless that sauage is taken. Please note: This is based on my observation, so I cannot be sure if this is the actual hotel policy or not.

Overall, I would not chose this hotel to stay in again. If you can get a better quality hotel for the same price or a few dollars more, I would recommend trying that. It did feel budget to us compared to the other hotels we stayed in Norway. I think we did not get a good deal on price.

The Thon Hotel Astoria is 2.5 blocks, a short walk, from the Oslo S Train Station. Transportation to/from the Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) Airport is convenient by train (either the NSB railroad or the faster Flutoget express train). The hotel is roughly half way between SAS Flybussen stops and a longer walk than the Oslo S.

Rooms are clean and basic with modernized plumbing. The Thon chain classifies the Astoria as a "budget" hotel, but "budget" in Norway means clean and not very "budget" by USA standards. But if you need to economize, don't go to Norway.

Breakfast is good by American standards. A lot of choices, especially if you like eggs, meats, cheese and fish. Very Norwegian, but still something most Americans can eat unless you are a Vegan.

Rooms are a bit tight for two people with ski gear, but we fit everything in with room to walk. For those going to the mountains, the hotel accepts checked luggage.

I stayed in this hotel twice in March 2012, for one night each time. I booked the rooms a few month in advance from Thon's website and had a decent price deal. The hotel is in a very convenient location, within walking distance from Oslo Central Station, close to the city center and all public transportation.
We had an efficient check-in both times and a nice welcome (on our second stay, we were even welcomed by a glass of bubbly wine and some snacks, apparently they offer that to guest once a month).
Both times our room were overlooking the inside courtyard and we heard no noise from the streets, but we heard noise from within the hotel from the adjacent rooms (bathroom noise in the morning for instance).
The first room we had was a double room, quite small (OK to sleep in but not much more) with a nice modern bathroom. The second room was a triple room, a bit bigger but still with little space to put the suitcases. The bathroom was very small and would flood entirely when taking a shower... Both times the rooms were spotlessly clean and the bedding very comfortable. We slept well despite some noise.
The breakfast is very good with a lot of choice. Wireless internet is offered in every room and works decently.

I would come back to this hotel for a short stay in Oslo.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard and not the street.
