“Great real ale”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

The Schouskjelleren serves up a great selection of real ales. The location in the cellar was quite homely. The prices were standard for beer in Oslo (i.e. very high) but that's to be expected. It's well worth the money.

“Excellent selection of beers, very nice cellar”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

Great selection of it's own and imported beers served by skilled personnel (brewers?) in a cozy cellar with high benches making an intimate atmosphere. Recommend for the beer loving lovers, as well :)

“Best real ale in Oslo”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

This is the place to go to if you love real ales, they brew their own real ales and also serve other Norwegian brews.
The brews are always interesting in flavour and sometimes on the experimental scale, which is appreciated.
The location is in a beer hall down the basement.
I would recommend going with the half pints as you probably want to try all of their selection, try to pronouce the name after 3 pints.

“Definitely a microbrewery”
Reviewed May 23, 2013 via mobile

Hours open: 16:00-1:00
16:00-2:00
16:00-3:00
(Basically it's open after 4 pm)

Prices: cheapest, 62 krones (typical norway beer price but you get microbrewery quality)

Atmosphere: The brewery has a great rustic feel, being located downstairs in one brick-walled cellar room. There is a firplace and also candles at each table. This makes for a great 'beer' 'microbrewery' feel.

Beer: There is a lot of variety, about 14 beers on tap, and even more bottled, from Denmark to the USA to Spain. I tried the 'Female of the Species' APA, 'First to die loses' IPA, 'Thanks for the memories' double IPA, 'Cascale' Blonde, 'Cappuccino stout' Stout and they were all very flavorful. Judging from those, I would imagine that every beer is very good. There are more unique beer types on tap (although not brewed there) like the 'Kentucky Ryed Chicken' and 'Martinique', which are specialty beers put into wooden barrels. I would recommend trying whichever ones you would like, rhey are probably all very good.

Cons: I do wish there were some bar snacks. Coming from Spain, where they give you something everytime you get a drink, I could have used some peanuts, although they are definitely not necessary. The beer is filling enough it could be a meal.

Why I recommend it: I think that beer in Norway might be too expensie to get casually at meals. I am a college student, on a college budget, and therefore opt to get glasses of free water with every meal. But saying that, I do love beer. And I do love good beer. This is a place where one can enjoy beer itself. Classic microbrewery: you can tell they care about the quality of their beer. Probably one of my favorite places in Norway.
