Owner description: The Kon-Tiki Museum houses original boats and artifacts from Thor Heyerdahl's world famous expeditions such as the original Kon-Tiki balsa raft which crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1947 and the original reed boat Ra II which crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1970. In both the Kon-Tiki and Ra exhibitions there are separate children exhibitions. The Kon-Tiki Museum also houses one of the most comprehensive exhibitions about Easter Island in the world, including a replica of a family cave from Easter Island. Underneath the Kon-Tiki raft is a special underwater exhibit that is fun for kids. Cinema screening the original Kon-Tiki documentary movie (Oscar for best documentary in 1951) every day at 12:00. Great museum shops. Free with Oslo Pass. A must when visiting Oslo!

Probably many people are unaware of Ko Tikki or Ra expeditions/voyages. Fascinating story of real adventures before health and safety, internet and GPS made world a small place. The actual 'boats/structures' are extraordinary - imagine crossing the Atlantic ocean on a home made raft!

The museum really does a nice job of not only showing the rafts/boats but also telling the story of the adventurers and their motivations and journey. Some interactive areas and if you are with kids make sure you find the "cave" on the very bottom level of the museum!

The story of the Kon-Tiki is so surreal and unbelievable, something you could only expect to learn about in a movie, that learning the story and seeing the real ship is truly something else!
We loved learning the story, and checking out the Kon-Tiki itself is a trip... it's hard to believe the journey these men took on in that raft!!
Very fun museum telling one of the most exciting stories of the last century!

I remember hearing about these amazing journeys when I was younger, having now seen this exhibition and read the information about these brave explorers, its difficult to comprehend how they managed to survive. Well worth a visit.
