No one in our party knew anything beyond the Hollywood depiction of vikings until we visited the museum. We all came away much enlightened, and impressed with how advanced and developed the vikings really were. This modest museum is very understated, but has excellent exhibits and lots of information. Young children may be quickly bored by this museum, but adults will enjoy it.

Great authentic ships and lots of history. There is much to see and learn about these 9th century ships and the culture that supported their existence.

I thought I knew, in my mind, what a Viking longboat looked like. However can prepare you for seeing the real deal up close. They are beautifully crafted vessels and we are luck that these three examples have been saved. Even if boats are not you thing there would be something at which to marvel.

If you do go to the museum it is also worthwhile taking some additional time to walk around the adjacent area as some of the large house are quite beautiful. In addition this can be incorporated whilst walking round to the Kon-Tiki Museum.

This museum is featuree in the movie at the end of the Norway exhibit at WDW in Orlando -- and I always wanted to see it live. The museum has 3 amazing viking burial ships that were excavated and offer a unique opportunity to see them up close. It takes 45 minutes or so to get a look at all three ships (be sure to climb up the stairs for views from above -- really gives a different perspective), see the artifacts in several side exhibits, and read some of the background information. The museum island is reached by boat -- which itself is a nice trip. I would certainly recommend this museum as a worthwhile place to visit from Oslo.
