“Celebrity spotting and variable service”
Reviewed November 26, 2011

I've never eaten here, just had something to drink. The place it self is nice enough, it's very popular among culture personalities, and the upper classes. A few years ago I enjoyed this place, the service was good, and they had good beer on tap (this was before Oslo's beer revolution.

Now the service is varying. I overheard a horrible waiter or maybe boss of some kind yell at a customer who was asking here about the reservation cards she was placing at the tables, shocking behavior! My wife and a friend was also rudely asked to leave during lunch time because they only had tea, as they wanted to seat guest who ordered food. But they were still allowed to buy very overpriced tea, from bags not fresh leaves. I've also had waiters who seem to hate their job, all the guests, and the place, and really wear this attutude not even trying to hide their distaste.

On the other hand, there is a really nice professional male waiter working here, who seems to understand the words customer service. If I was the owner I would chuck most of the ground staff out, and find people with some pride in what they do.

“Never disappointed - the food is always good”
Reviewed October 7, 2011

I like to meet friends after work at Kafe Oslo at Litteraturhuset in Oslo. Usually we eat dinner. I have never been disappointed - the dinner is always good and tasty and the staff is friendly. I have been to many restaurants in Europe with a Michelin star - the food/dinner at Kafe Oslo is better than at some of these restaurants. It is also a very relaxed ambience.

“OK spot for a simple dinner with colleagues and guests”
Reviewed March 2, 2011

Some say it is The place to be seen, but this is hardly the case. A cafe/restaurant in Oslo's Literature house, with quite reasonably priced food. Had a great experience with fillet of venison last time I went, but the food can be a bit dull also, don't expect gournet food.

Don't expect too much of the service here. This is in no way a gourmet place, but a café in the "house of literature", so a place to be and be seen if you are interested in culture. The place is quite popular, so can be crowded at times.

That said, it is quite all right to go here if you are just hungry or thirsty too. The food is straight, honest and quite good, and for Oslo, actually pretty good value. In the summer, there is good opportunity for al fresco.
