On our recent trip to see the Northern Lights we wanted to be based in Tromso, the gateway to all the touring possibilities in the area, as well as activities like dog-sledding, etc. Tromso is a beautiful little town on the coast that is stunning to walk around in. We also wanted a self-catering apartment. The two possibilities we found were City Living and Viking Apartments, which are run by, and are around the corner from, the Viking Hotel. When you see the prices for eating out, believe me you'll want a self-catering apartment also...City Living was booked by the time we reserved (four months in advance of our trip!). So we reserved with Viking.

The apartment we reserved was supposed to have one bedroom. It had two, but we were told not to use one, unless we wanted the price jacked up, which we didn't. I also had no need for a second bedroom as it was just me and my husband. It had a nice kitchen, with a stove, ceramic stovetop, oven, microwave and refrigerator. It was a bit low on conveniences like a can opener or a vegetable peeler, but had plenty of cutlery, dishes and pots. There was also no separate dining room table and chairs, the coffee table and sectional sofa serving that function. The mattresses were a bit thin, and my sensitive back was not happy. The closet in the bedroom we used was a bit blocked by the wall. There was a lovely, large bathroom with a shower and abundant hot water. But no hooks for hanging towels. Lots of clean towels were left for us.

But the best thing about this apartment was the location. very close to a supermarket and shopping center, the Polar Museum, Polaria, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Art, the Costume Museum and a beautiful movie theater. It's near the docks if you are coming in with the ferry and know which way to walk. It is located on a side street around the corner from the center of town. With sidewalks covered in ice and snow, and snow coming down daily, believe me you will appreciate this location!! You will have to drag your suitcase through the snow, so be prepared.

I found the manager very nice and eager to help. He tells me our apartment is going to be renovated soon, so I'm sure all the drawbacks I mentioned will soon be fixed. Tromso is extremely quiet, but having an apartment on the ground floor meant that the little elephants dancing above us sometimes became a nuisance. If you are noise sensitive, and don't care about climbing steps, ask for an upstairs apartment, newly renovated.

Room tip: Ask for a renovated apartment on the top floor

We stayed for 6 nights with four persons (2 adults and a 13 and 18 year old) in a familyroom (4 single beds) and had a great time. It is not a big room, bit it will do. We had a room on the streetside, but there was not a lot of noice even with the window open. The most noice is the snow shovel in the early morning. The free internet is a big bonus. The breakfast is very good and more then enough. Lots of choice and what to think of salads and salmon in the morning ! The free coffee and tea is always fresh to take up to the room. The owner and staff are very helpfull.

We came for the Northern lights and were lucky to see it twice. If you can rent a car it is much more comfortable to find the "lights" on you own. The staff will certainly point you in the right direction .... Parking is free from saturday afternoon till monday morning around the block, but after that you need a lot of NOK coins. You can also arrange parking from the hotel for a 24 hour fee.

This hotel is just off the centre of Tromso, it was quiet and warm. The staff were all extremely welcoming and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was towards the back and very quiet, clean, warm and had a comfortable bed. The shower was very efficient and the under floor heating in the bathroom most welcome. Considering how expensive accommodation is in Norway, this hotel was a gem!
