“Fabulous trip!”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

This was a very good trip. I booked this trip for catching safari, it's worth! We started from 7 o'clock, and drove faraway from the city. Sometimes we stopped at beautiful place, so that we could took pictures. The guide was friendly, passionate, and willing help. He talked to people a lot, shared lots of things with us. Finally we saw Northern lights. Even though it was weak, but it was unforgettable! A very good memory in my life!

“Great experience”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

Getting to experience the northern lights depends on many factors. On one side it's the things you can't control, like how lucky you are to have a good solar activity and a clear sky. On the other side it's the things that you should be able to control, like getting to the right location, with as much clear sky as possible for the area, and having the right equipment. For these latter things, the guys from Arctic Explorers are highly recommendable. They are well informed with the latest local weather forecasts, they know the area very well, with very good remote locations to experience the aurora and they will do all the possible to find clear sky windows if the local weather is not good (this can involve a lot of driving). They also provide additional clothing, tripods, picture taking advices and a tasty worm meal and beverages. The groups are small, 8 persons max, which provides greater flexibility and comfort. We went for three nights with them. Oysten was very nice to listen to, he has very good knowledge of the area and clearly enjoys what he's doing. In the first night we were extremely lucky and had a spectacular lights show, so we didn't need to drive very far away. Even though in the last night the weather wasn't that good, the efforts he made to find clear sky windows are much appreciated. It was a very nice experience and a good company!

“Chasing the Lights in Tromso with fun and lots of luck”
Reviewed January 8, 2014 via mobile

My family of 5 decided to visit Tromso after hearing about higher chance to view Northern Light late this year and early part of next year. We engaged Arctic Explorer and Matt was our guide.

A mini van took the 8 of us (3 other guests) with Matt at 6.30 pm from our hotel. The journey started with change of winter gears at the warehouse where jumpsuits, boots and gloves were provided. The weather forecast was not great but Matt was very enthusiastic. The initial plan was to head north but with Matt's contact, we moved South instead. Within the next hour or so, he spotted a slight sight of the light. There and then, he stopped at a bend that was safe for us to put up our tripod and camera. He has a few tripods for our use, FOC. The next hour, we had great display of the Lights in the form of rays and also snake like movements. Matt provided advice on camera settings and exposures to capture the display. We moved on to the next site after the clouds moved in and after Matt cooked packaged food for our "dinner".

It was an open space covered with snow. While we were waiting for the next display, Matt started a fire in the snow. We had great fun with marshmallow and hot drinks and my kids enjoyed "swimming" in the virgin snow. Hours passed but our luck ran out. No sight of lights and it has passed the time to return to our hotel. While on our way back, Matt was kind enough to stop at a spot for another try as the sky cleared. Well, it was a good attempt but no luck. We were back at the hotel at about 4am, at least 3 hours longer than the stipulated tour duration.

Overall, we were grateful to have the chance to view the Lights at the first attempt. We were also happy to have Matt as our guide as he shared many interesting stories and experience about the Lights. It may be relatively expensive at our Asian's standard but it was worth it.

“Very professional organisation”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

It's hard to give a 5 star review when we didn't get to see the lights, but these guys deserve it. We went out on Monday 30th December and it snowed pretty much the entire time, right across the Finnish border. Our guide was wonderful - I'm afraid I've forgotten her name, but she is Finnish. The trip lasted for almost 11 hours which was well beyond what could be expected (and maybe a bit much for the guide driver, even with stops). The conditions were't great, but she is a very safe driver and I had full confidence in her the entire time.
We found the organisation to be very professional, the trip to the warehouse was fast, with suits and boots in every size that are easy to find, and extras such as hats, socks and mittens. It was perhaps a bit of a nuisance to have to return here at the end of the night with most people disappointed at the lack of a light show, but again it was fast. There was no time to get cold. The expedition food is a nice touch also, it's good to get warm food on a cold night.
The company have three minibuses, and while they stay in contact they don't necessarily go the exact same spot, so it feels like you are in a small group at all times. Pick-up and drop-off is at your hotel, which is also a nice touch.
We did get a quick glimpse of the lights right at the end, which is more than most groups did who were out that night. We also saw the lights over the next three nights, including a really spectacular show on 1st Jan. It would have been nice to be with Arctic Explorers however, as they seemed truly disappointed at the failure on our first night. We had a fine time with another company, but I would definitely recommend AE. You won't regret choosing them.

“You couldn't not ask for more”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

We had the most dedicated guide, Maarit that anyone could hope for. She went over and above the call of duty to ensure that we had the best experience.
Ok, staying up until 5:00am is not everyone's cuppa tea but we did see the lights.
Thank you for sharing this amazing part of the world, the beauty of nature, the cold, the lights of course and your cooking - very impressive that you can feed eight different meals in only 20 minutes!
If you would like to have the best chance in seeing the elusive lights - give these guys a go
