My husband and I went on the Tromso Lapland daytime Reindeer sledding with Sami culture tour on Sun 20th Jan and it was a great decision. Our host (in full Sami costume) was so knowledgeable and friendly, making us very welcome from the start. He picked us up from Tromso city centre and took us to their Sami tepees outside of Tromso.
We saw the reindeer from the minute we arrived and the were so beautiful, if a bit timid! The two tepees were so impressive and the whole snowy scene was set off by the pink glow of the morning sun behind the mountains on the horizon. A truly beautiful scene. You can imagine how excited we all were and we were given all the time we wanted to take pictures. Our hosts were only too happy to oblige when we asked for photos and they even took some for us too.
We were all given a ride for around 15 mins on a reindeer sledge drawn by one reindeer and led by one of our hosts. It was at times a bumpy ride but these small animals were so strong and it was very enjoyable.
When we came back to the tepees, we were given a lesson in lasso throwing - a skill used by the Sami for catching and controlling the reindeer. This was optional but we had a go and managed it!
We were then taken into the smaller tepee and sat around a fire on reindeer skins and branches to listen to our host telling us about the Sami traditions and stories. We also had the chance to see some real Sami artifacts. It was so cosy inside the tepee.
We then went to the larger tepee and were treated to some traditional Sami singing and gained more knowledge about this amazing, tough people of the north. You really do have an insight into the way of life of these people and how important their relationship with the environment and the animals around them is to them. We also learnt about the threat to the Sami people and lands from modern society.
We then all sat down around a huge fire to some home made reindeer stew (delicious and should be tried at least once), chocolate, coffee, water and lemonade. We had a really nice chat to not only our guides but also the other tourists on the trip.
We were then given some time to take some more pix and watch the reindeer tucking into their food before being taken back to Tromso city centre.
The whole trip lasted three hours and was great from start to finish. It really was an insight into Sami culture and is definitely one for the culuralists. We loved it as we are fascinated by different cultures. However, I would have liked to have had more time with the reindeer and sledding as I dont think 15 mins is long enough really, considering the cost of the excursion. This was the most expensive excursion that we did. We did a dog sledding trip with another company the following day and had a much longer ride. But, you should definitely give Tromso Lapland a try as it is lovely to do during the day and our guide was so enthusiastic.
A lovely morning's activity.
