“A Museum with an Aquarium!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2013

The Polaria centre in Tromso is unusual in that it combines an aquarium with a museum. There is a cinema with five large screens arranged in an arc, giving the impression that the audience is in the middle of the action. We were shown a magnificent video of the Northern Lights, which was really spectacular. I also saw a film made on the island of Svalbard, which made me feel a if I was really flying over it, with a bird's eye view of the landscape and the wildlife. ! was lucky to catch the seals at feeding time, when they did some clever tricks. The architecture of the building is very contemporary; it resembles huge slabs of ice, leaning against each other. Well worth a visit.

“Ok for small kids to kill some time while waiting in Tromsø.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2013

Nice place for small kids. Me and my 3 year old son spent 3 hours walking arround inside, playing and looking at the fish. He was a bit fascinated about the ship-controll simulator. Spent 1 hour just up there and he loved it ! Small, but nice place. Ok value for price. NOT recomended for foreign adult tourists unless you realy like to learn a bit about Norwegian sealife. If i came alone without my son, i will have left withinn 20-30 min. after seeing the Northern light movie on the big screen and the fish-area.So i will only recomend polaria for families with small children (up to age 6-7 years).

“Don't Bother. The best bit is the free view from the outside.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2013

Pretty cool looking piece of architecture from the outside but thats about it. You could probably spend more time in the gift shop than in the museum. For what you pay its really not worth it. The two videos on the northern lights and Svalbard were the most interesting bits each lasting less than 10 minutes. The rest of the exhibition is really quite disordered accompanied by poorly written displays. I'd say don't bother.

“Could be so much better...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 12, 2013

Went with high hopes, from the name and the literature available it was the first place we visited in Tromso. The building looked very cool and had a funky architectural style. It was however a disappointment, apart from the seal show and two films in the cinema, there isn't a lot else to do, unless you had kids, where there was a play area and a few more exhibits for them. There could be scope for a much better experience. We only stayed 1 and 1/2 hours as we felt we had to get some value for the quite high entrance fee!

The seal show was quite good, they were trained well and performed the stunts/activities to get the food but as there was three trainers working/feeding with the seals as the same time, it was difficult to keep your attention on one seal at any one time, maybe a more structured display would be better. The films in the cinema were good to see, but quite short, only 15mins and full of annoying visitors taking pictures of the northern lights on the screens, even though it says not to!

so,so really, not worth the cost of the entrance fee and you come away with a feeling of 'that could have been better'.

The aquarium is great and there is a nice collection artic animals. The other displays are very disordered and but all have a common theme of polar exploration and artic. Great building.
