“Very interesting”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Feeding of the seals, displays and films shown all very good. Visit coincided with that by a cruise ship party, but still plenty of room for everyone.

“Very good experience”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

The two films which one can see at Polaria, Wildlife of Svalbard and the Northern Lights, were evocative and worth seeing. The simulated tundra walk is a fun idea but not extensive in scale. The seals are amazing to watch and seeing them from below an added bonus. There are some other features like a play area which will appeal to children. Visiting Polaria did not take as long as I anticipated because it was not enormous in size. Something which it is worth every visitor to Tromso doing.

“Missable, and a bit sad”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

Polaria was lame, I think it’s quite missable. The aquarium is dismal, very few tiny tanks, and some poor seals that thankfully were born in captivity so they don’t have anything else to compare to their plasticky enclosure. Kids would like the feeding time, when the seals perform tricks to be fed. Also, the glass tunnel going under the seal tank is pretty cool.

The building looks cool from the outside, but is pretty normal inside. You can watch a movie about Svalbard which has some beautiful scenery, although there is no commentary so you don’t learn anything about the area, just that it is beautiful and mostly covered in snow and ice. They also show a movie about the northern lights (the two movies alternate, every half hour I think, both with music only), but we didn’t stay long enough to see it.

They are affiliated with an arctic conservation organization, and there are some interesting displays on the walls that describe environmental problems now facing the world and in particular the arctic region, then present opinions on both sides of the issue, and at the end give their recommendation for action.

Altogether, rather poor, but an extra star for the seal tunnel and another one for the arctic conservation efforts.
