“Poorly designed display”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

We wanted to learn something about the Sami, their history and traditions and current circumstances. The display at the museum was very disappointing. Badly designed but demonstrating the sort of attitudes that indigenous peoples often have to deal with. Funny people in cute hats. Id
doubt they realise how condescending they are being.

“Worth visiting when you've seen other things first.”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

This is a museum that seems to be trying hard to update itself - the exhibitions on the evolution of arctic animals and humans was great, as were the exhibitions on the Sami and history of Tromso area. The geological exhibitions haven't been updated in some time but seemed to be a lot of fun for a group of Primary school children that were there at the same time as us, so what do I know, haha.

“Very interesting museum”
Reviewed May 8, 2014

I spent a great time visiting this museum : there is a room about fauna in arctic Norway, with strong scientific basis, well explained. A room about archaeology explains everything about rock tools, fire, ... with videos, everything well documented. In another room, I love the exhibition about Sami history, culture. There is also an exhibition about the place of Sami in present society. A room about geology in Northern Norway was rebuilt, as the exhibition about Northern Lights.
Another interesting point is the location of the museum : you can go to the shore of the Island by walking though a nice park, and there, you can see great panoramas on fjords and mountains.
The museum is easily accessible by bus (n°37) from the center of the city. The staff is very welcoming and you can buy many things in the shop of the museum.

“Good for a rainy day”
Reviewed March 30, 2014

This is a small museum which displays the archeological and geological history of the area as well as a section on the Sami people. Much of the written content is in Norwegian.
