Small museum of all things to do with polar exploration. A lot of original artifacts and archiological finds. Very inexpensive and lots to see.

It was sort of like a circus side show; with a lot of mock-ups of scenes where seals are being clubbed, plus other stuffed animals, old random tools and black and white photo's. Most of the text is in Norwegian, so you have to puzzle out what you are looking at sometimes. All this in overwhelming heat.

Its only £6. So if you have an hour you want to kill in Tromso, its probably worth it. But don't go in expecting a lot.

Great into into regional history. Not enough on the development of Tromso. Really good detail on North Pole exploration

I completely agree with the reviewer who said they entered with no interest in polar exploration but was interested by the time they left! I had exactly the same experience. We came to the Polarmuseet as part of the Tromso City Walking Tour organised through the Tourist Information Centre. The guide who came with us spoke fluent English and Norwegian so was able to answer all our questions and interpret the panels, not all of which have English translation. There is a paper guide available in English though, I think. The museum seems small but around every corner is another fascinating exhibit, laid out in a way that keeps you interested and gives you a real impression of what it was like to try and get to the North Pole in the early 20th Century. Well worth a visit - now I am fascinated by the early Arctic explorers and shopping around for books on the subject.

Very interesting with a great historical perspective and lots of fascinating exhibits concerning polar exploration. You need to ask for the English guide however as they aren't offered automatically. We went around the museum in reverse and only found there was an English guide afterwards!
