“Very interesting!”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

I completely agree with the reviewer who said they entered with no interest in polar exploration but was interested by the time they left! I had exactly the same experience. We came to the Polarmuseet as part of the Tromso City Walking Tour organised through the Tourist Information Centre. The guide who came with us spoke fluent English and Norwegian so was able to answer all our questions and interpret the panels, not all of which have English translation. There is a paper guide available in English though, I think. The museum seems small but around every corner is another fascinating exhibit, laid out in a way that keeps you interested and gives you a real impression of what it was like to try and get to the North Pole in the early 20th Century. Well worth a visit - now I am fascinated by the early Arctic explorers and shopping around for books on the subject.

“Excellent and informative museum”

Very interesting with a great historical perspective and lots of fascinating exhibits concerning polar exploration. You need to ask for the English guide however as they aren't offered automatically. We went around the museum in reverse and only found there was an English guide afterwards!

“Lesson in Arctic Exploration”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

This museum is housed in what, from the outside, looks like a small seaside building. Once on the inside you realize that it has a lot to offer. Nice photographs and artefacts from the days of pioneering polar exploration. It shows a bloody harvest of the natural resources found in the polar areas and how the harsh environment of the arctic were conquered. More aimed at adults and well worth a visit whilst in Tromsø.

“Interesting though full of stuffed animals”

Very interesting especially if you are happy to read a booklet that they give you in English. There were lots of things that I would have understood more had there been more English labels but then the English expect everything in English which I think is wrong of us

“Wasn't expecting to like this....”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

but I did. That may have been due to the German girl who took me on a walk of the city and then through this museum. Most of the signs are in Norwegian but I think you can get the gist of things. I didn't have a particular interest in polar exploration beforehand but left with one.
