I've been wanting to see the Northern Lights for about 10 years now, but never got round to going. This September my parents and I visited Tromso specifically to see them. Not only did Kjetil advise us the best time to come (as an FYI September tends to have clearer skies) but also made our visit incredible.
Although we had initially only booked to go out on the Tuesday and Thursday, we ended up going out on three nights. We didn't see much on Tuesday (only a very faint band on the horizon) and, advising that we were unlikely to see more that evening, at around 10pm Kjetil offered to take us out on Wednesday as well when forecasts looked better, rather than wait all night and be disappointed. Thank goodness he did: both Wednesday and Thursday the lights were spectacular.
I cannot describe how stunning the lights were, or how great Kjetil made the experience. Hugely knowledgeable and incredibly friendly, alongside fantastic locations, warm drinks and great snacks, he really did make the 10 year wait worth it.
I would highly recommend going to see the lights with him; I really doubt you'll find anyone else more dedicated or knowledgable.
Thank you Kjetil
We really can’t thank Kjetil enough for three wonderful evenings watching the northern lights. It’s something we have wanted to do for years so after contacting Kjetil for advice, via emails and phone conversations, we travelled to Tromso in September 2017 around the time of the Autumn Equinox.
We know that nature is unpredictable, therefore we booked two tours to give ourselves the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora – for Tuesday and Thursday.
We saw our first northern lights on the Tuesday; a beautiful band of light that spread across the skies. We were happy. However, Kjetil knew that a solar storm had just happened and that the northern lights would be better the next evening: therefore he suggested that we cut our evening short, treat the Tuesday as a taster trip, and go out again on the Wednesday evening – at no extra charge! We cannot thank Kjetil enough. On our Wednesday night tour the northern lights were spectacular – every colour imaginable, dancing across the skies in all shapes and patterns, like some form of modern art but far, far better. Incredible beyond descrption. On Thursday Kjetil took us to one of his favourite places for observing the northern lights. We were on a beach with a log fire, having coffee and cookies, listening to the waves lapping the shore. This time the lights were different but just as spectacular. To the naked eye they seemed white, and they filled the skies with constantly changing patterns and intensity, their reflections shimmering in the water: we were enthralled for hours. The skies for as far as you could see were filled with Aurora Borealis.
So why go with Kjetil? Quite simply, he really is the best. He’s been doing this for years (unlike other guides), knows when and where to find the northern lights, and (again, unlike other guides who seem to have only one or two set places to visit) will drive great distances to ensure that you have the best possible chance to see the northern lights – even if you have to go to Finland. And he’s an incredibly nice person as well: we thoroughly enjoyed three memorable evenings in his company.
Thank you Kjetil. We had the very best time, and an experience that the three of us will remember for the rest of our lives.
I had a terrific time with Kjetil. He is very friendly and it was a pleasure to discuss while waiting for the lights. He is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to Northern lights theory, forecast, activity analyses etc And also in photography for those who are interested. The spot he had chosen was great given the conditions and we managed to see some very beautiful lights. I can't think him enough, I had by far the best time of my stay in Tromso ! I would not hesitate to go again with hom to chase the light or on anyother activity he may offer.
From the moment we first contacted Kjetil, we knew we would be in great hands on our chases. His immediate responses to our many email questions were always extremely informative and friendly!! We took two chases with him. Kjetil's goal is to find clear skies in the hopes of providing his guests a chance to see the northern lights. He was continually monitoring the skies and his apps, as well as keeping in contact with colleagues in the hunt for the perfect location. He is a true, dedicated professional! On our first night, he was able to find two areas with clear skies for us to witness the Aurora! He was very helpful to our fellow travelers who needed assistance with camera techniques. He also provided tea and a light snack, and had warm clothing gear if we needed it. On our second night he was willing to drive us quite far into Finland to search for clear skies, but Mother Nature did not want to help out. His efforts were so appreciated however and his passion for accomplishing his tour goals is palpable! Kjetil is a wonderful gentleman whose quiet approach to the evening matches the quiet elegance of the terrain and skies around and above you on your search. If you are looking for a guide to take you on an authentic hunt for the northern lights start booking now! P.S. - He sent us some magnificent photos of our trip! What a great memory and what a great guide!! Many, many thanks to you Kjetil!!!
Thank you so much. It was a pleasure :)
I scheduled my trip to Tromso so that I would be able to book a tour with Kjetil Skogli, and I am so happy that I did so! He is a man of relatively few words- after meeting our group of 7 (never more than that number), he spent his time concentrating on figuring out the best places to go. The signs were good- the stars were out- so we were able to spend our time in the Tromso vicinity at two different locations. Although i must admit a fleeting pang of disappointment that we did not have to chase across the border to Finland as i have read in other reports, I enjoyed the luxury of spending the time outside and saying wow several times in a row - he says it is a common expression! Embarassing to admit, I brought my very first DLSR on this trip, and no amount of online coaching prepared me to shoot the northern lights. Kjetil set the manual settings, and helped with the tripod, and my resulting photographs were beautiful. The other photographers in our group were far more advanced, and I heard him give them what amounted to a master class in night photography. However, I do not want to emphasize only the photography. What was most important to me was sharing the stillness and beauty of the Nordic evenings with congenial people and a kind and expert guide.
Thank you so much. It was a pleasure :)
