Owner description: The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights. Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

“Great view, open until 1am”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2014

On arriving in Tromsø at 9pm I thought that nothing would still be open. The cable car operates until 1am, with trips running every 30minutes, the last cable car up is just after midnight. I travelled in August so this may not be the case all year round. The station is across the bridge on the mainland and five minutes walk south of the Arctic Cathedral. The ride takes you to a viewpoint on Mount Storsteinen 450m above sea level. There is a café, a kids playground and a sami hut up there. Information panels point out the mountains you can see. The view is breath taking. You can see Tromsø in its entirety. The airport on the far side and snow capped mountains far beyond. A return ticket is 140kr. You only need spend 30 minutes up there.

“Spectacular views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2014

Although a long walk from our location to the base of the cable car, the view from the top certainly justified the effort. Once at the top, we took in the views of Tromsø before heading off for a warmer-than-expected wander around Mount Storsteinen in the snow. We had a nice burger for lunch in the café before heading back down.

“Not for people with vertigo, but WOW!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2014

I have a little problem with heights, but decided to try anyway. The ride was ok, there were not any wind so it was smooth - luckily. Worst bit was the last 75 meters to the top. And I didn't fully enjoy the stay at the top, I worried about the trip down. Spectacular views, even in slightly bad weather. I got some great photos. Next time I think I will walk and enjoy it fully. I know it will be with it.

“Best Place to toast the midnight sun!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2014

Great view over Tromso and the islands. We went two nights in a row to see the midnight sun. We were awed and had a great time. The operators were pleasant and helpful.

“Lovely vantage point”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2014

We walked here from the town. It takes about 35-45 minutes and is very scenic when the snow is on the ground. It is quite cold though. The ride takes about 10 mins and there are toilets and cafe at the top. There is plenty of room to walk about once at the top, but once there the wind was really perishing. If you do visit when there is snow on the ground at the bottom, then you must wear the appropriate shoes and clothing or you may regret trying to take photos from the view points. Good fun.
