“Awesome View, But Crammed Cable Car!”

Owner description: The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights. Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

The views from the mountain top are incredible. Western and Northern Norway offer an assortment of awesome views-- and this one is one of the best! The cable car ride to the top (and back) is perilous and uncomfortable, however, as they crammed us in like sardines. (They laughed that we exceeded the passenger limit both ways.) Is there a regular health and safety inspection of this practice? They should consider running the cable car circuit more frequently than each 30 minutes, resulting in runs somewhat less crowded.

Great view of Tromso.
One warning - the tourist map shows that the local bus route ends at the cable car - it doesn't, it continues on a loop. The entry to the cable car is not obvious from the bus, and we over-shot and had to walk back. Keep your eyes open, or ask the bus driver to tell you when you get to the cable car.

Seriously, just go up there and see for yourself. It's amazing =) We where super lucky and got great weather, and got to see the city in the sun, while eating ice cream dressed only in t-shirts. The weather was much warmer up there than down in the city center!

Took bus no. 26 in front of Peppe's Pizza near Torget (The Main Square) to the cable car station.

In mid Mar it was still cold and covered in snow. A beautiful winter scenery. The view was fantastic as it was a clear day, could see the Arctic Cathedral, the bridge, Tromsø town with a backdrop of snow covered mountains. What a view!

The place to go to get pictures and see the midnight sun. Totally recommend the restaurant up there for a snack. Great waffles!
