I stayed over here for 3 nights with my friend and her parent, and I stayed over more 2 nights for solo traveller. Sydspissen hotel is the excellent location to see the Northern Lights with a nice scenery of the coast. I can see the Northern Lights from the window of the room. The second floor at coast side is the better choice. However, walk to the coast is the best location for the Northern Lights and do not forget your Torch!.

If you do not travel by Taxi or Car, there is Bus no.34 at Sydspissen to Tromsø town. One way cost for Bus is 42 NOK, but you can buy 1-day ticket or 2-day ticket which cost only 70 or 120 NOK at Bus office near Tromsø tourist information. This ticket can be used for City Buses in Tromsø including Bus no.40 & 42 which take you to Airport, but cannot be used for Airport Bus. Other tickets can be asked at Bus office as well.

Airport is just only 10-15 min by Taxi from Sydspissen hotel, or 30-50 min by Bus (Take Bus no.34 from Sydspissen to Polaria bus stop and take Bus no.42 at Bus stop which is opposite the Polaria bus stop to Airport.) You can find Bus time table at the Bus stop/or brochure at Tourist information & Bus office/or brochure on the Bus.

There are many restaurants/cafes in Tromsø town. However, there is the super market called "Coop" near Sydspissen Hotel. Just 5-8 min walk from Sydspissen Hotel.

Becareful for unusual closed time of Breakfast that Staff has not informed you in advance.

Enjoy your trip!

Room Tip: The second floor at coast side is a good room for scenery.

I really cannot fault this place - do not expect luxury but for what it is it's unbeatable.

Rooms were basic but warm and clean. All the beds are single, but they can be pushed together if needed. It feels a bit like a cross between a budget hotel and a youth hostel, with big self-service dining room where the good breakfast was served. Its also a good spot to hang out at at other times of day - it was exciting at times overhearing other's stories about light hunting.

It's a walk into town, but this was nice enough. We tended to walk in and then get a bus or taxi back, which worked well. There is a big co-op five minutes away.

But the real draw is the hotel's location a couple of minutes from the coast path. Because this gets you away from the street lights, it's a perfect spot for spotting the northern lights - we saw them down there on two of our three attempts, including one spectacular display . The coast also makes a pleasant enough walk during the day, with good views of the sea and hills.

Around 15 minutes drive form the airport. Great views and Excellent location.
Bathroom door not good. Noise through rooms is a slight issue. Outdated interiors.. Very near to coop extra. Very convenient. Supernatural service. Showers is fantastic. Good sized room. Tv channels alright. 18 channels of which 10 were working
Rooms weren't cleaned when we checked in. To which the receptionist was truly apologetic and got it cleaned right away. Rooms cleaned during the day too and it was neat and tidy
Breakfast. Usual Norwegian breakfast. Lots of different kinds of grains based bread available, cereals, Milk, Cold meats, Yogurt. All in all decent spread and will get you through to lunch
Tea and coffers available 24x7 in the lounge but not in the room which was not too inconvenient.
On the whole would rate it 3.5 stars out of 5. Would recommend this hotel in Tromso, but bear in mind the slightly outdated interiors.

We stayed at Sydspissen because it was the only hotel available on Tromsø without a stupid price tag at the time of our journey, but this turned out to be a bit of good luck.

The hotel is a short walk from a nice little beach which is ideal for viewing the Northern Lights in the evening and is right next to a location I have been using for the last 12 years.

The hotel is well signposted from the main road and just a short walk away from a COOP supermarket.

The rooms are compact with two narrow single beds placed end to end along one wall but you can put them together if you want to, the bathroom is basic, with a sliding door, a toilet, basin and shower, there is no hairdryer in the bathroom but the room itself has a small TV and a mini fridge.

The included breakfast is fairly standard although a little thin on some items, it includes some very nice fresh breads, a selection of toppings to make your own sandwiches, a selection of cereals, rather watery fruit juices, tea and coffee.

Parking is free if you have a car but if you don't it is possible to walk into the centre of Tromsø although it could take you up to an hour depending on your walking speed.

A taxi from the airport to the hotel costs about NOK 220, the bus is cheaper but takes a lot longer.

Very good place to stay if you're on a budget. The breakfast was very nice and consisted of Bread, pålæg (toppings, cold meat and such), jam, cheese, egg, yoghurt, fruit, tea, coffee, juice, etc. The tea and coffee is available all day and there's access to a toaster and microwave. The room was clean, beds were comfortable enough and there's an old tv, but why would you watch tv on holiday anyway. There's a phone in the room and it's free to use, good for take aways to cure that late night hunger. The bathroom had a great shower and towels!!! The hotel is not in the centre of town. It's about 20-30 min walk or 5-10 min by bus, but you can get a weekly travel card (periodebillett-mini), 180Kr for 4 days or 250Kr for 7 days, which will probably work out cheaper than paying 40Kr a fare. Buses stop running around midnight though, so you'll have to walk back if you stay out late, but it's a nice walk and then there's always the possibility of the seeing the northern lights :) Nice views from the back of the hotel, and would also be good for viewing the northern lights.

Also, the staff are great. I had some problems with the airline that I flew with and one of the guys at reception called them for me to sort it out :)
