“Budget Hotel with good views of the Northern Lights”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

We stayed at Sydspissen because it was the only hotel available on Tromsø without a stupid price tag at the time of our journey, but this turned out to be a bit of good luck.

The hotel is a short walk from a nice little beach which is ideal for viewing the Northern Lights in the evening and is right next to a location I have been using for the last 12 years.

The hotel is well signposted from the main road and just a short walk away from a COOP supermarket.

The rooms are compact with two narrow single beds placed end to end along one wall but you can put them together if you want to, the bathroom is basic, with a sliding door, a toilet, basin and shower, there is no hairdryer in the bathroom but the room itself has a small TV and a mini fridge.

The included breakfast is fairly standard although a little thin on some items, it includes some very nice fresh breads, a selection of toppings to make your own sandwiches, a selection of cereals, rather watery fruit juices, tea and coffee.

Parking is free if you have a car but if you don't it is possible to walk into the centre of Tromsø although it could take you up to an hour depending on your walking speed.

A taxi from the airport to the hotel costs about NOK 220, the bus is cheaper but takes a lot longer.

Very good place to stay if you're on a budget. The breakfast was very nice and consisted of Bread, pålæg (toppings, cold meat and such), jam, cheese, egg, yoghurt, fruit, tea, coffee, juice, etc. The tea and coffee is available all day and there's access to a toaster and microwave. The room was clean, beds were comfortable enough and there's an old tv, but why would you watch tv on holiday anyway. There's a phone in the room and it's free to use, good for take aways to cure that late night hunger. The bathroom had a great shower and towels!!! The hotel is not in the centre of town. It's about 20-30 min walk or 5-10 min by bus, but you can get a weekly travel card (periodebillett-mini), 180Kr for 4 days or 250Kr for 7 days, which will probably work out cheaper than paying 40Kr a fare. Buses stop running around midnight though, so you'll have to walk back if you stay out late, but it's a nice walk and then there's always the possibility of the seeing the northern lights :) Nice views from the back of the hotel, and would also be good for viewing the northern lights.

Also, the staff are great. I had some problems with the airline that I flew with and one of the guys at reception called them for me to sort it out :)

First of all, this hotel is more of a convention hotel, so things are pretty bare, but functional. AT least it is clean. Wifi is reachable in the rooms but I guess it is placed closer to the reception so when I got a room that was at the end of the corridor, the signal was pretty low and keep on getting disconnected.

The reception staffs are very helpful, just as you would expect in Norway as I learnt. Sydpissen is located to the south of the island that Tromsø is located in. Good things is that there is a bus that goes from the hotel to downtown Tromsø in almost no time (5mins or so) and pretty cheap at 40NOK in case you don't know what to do with your kronor coins.

There is a supermarket nearby in case you need supplies. While there I didn't see many restaurants nearby, and since I had a car (parking is free by the way), I just drove into downtown Tromsø for meals and picked up snacks at the supermarket which is a 5mins walk from the hotel.

Breakfast is included. Cereals, bread, ham, fruits, coffee, tea, the usual stuff.

The beauty of this place is the proximity to Telegrafbukta, which is the place that was recommended as one of the best to see the Northern Lights in Tromsø if you don't have a car or prefer not to drive too far. Sure you can't escape the city lights, but sometimes the lights are so strong, it doesn't really matter. The direction of the view is south and west so the lights will have to be relatively strong for it to appear, otherwise the view would be to the north west. Anyway, the beach is pretty rocky so bring along a headlamp if you don't want to sprain your ankles. But it goes like this, walk to the beach, see the lights, and once you're tired of straining your neck and the biting cold at night, just go back to the room and sleep. No hour long drive.

Oh, and if you researched all the hotels in Tromsø, you'd find that Sydspissen is one of the best value hotels in Tromsø. Great if you don't need a central location and you just need a base that is close to Tromsø to drive around.

We went to Tromso at a busy times and ended up staying at Sydspissen almost as a last resort. So it was a wonderful surprise to arrive after 40 hours of traveling. The rooms are basic but have everything you need and are spotless - great showers too. Staff were really friendly and helpful and the breakfast was superb. Ask for a room with a view of the beach - it is beautiful.
It is a food 20 minutes walk from the town but there is a bus if you don't want to walk that runs every 20 minutes.

I stayed three nights in this hotel. I paid 2620 NOK in Booking.com to 2 persons. When I arrived in Hotel, my reservation was OK.
I will try to put as much information as possible for everyone. Also took some pictures to illustrate better.

Room and Bed: The room have a nice size. Not Big, Not small. (You can check the size in my pictures). Beds not much confortable, reasonable beds. We stayed in a Twin beds, and the beds not are so big, but fits well.

IMPORTANT: In Three Nights in this Hotel, NO MAID, NOBODY CLEAN THE ROOM. NOBODY CHANGE OR ORGANIZE THE BEDS. Someone go direct to Bathroom, and change the towel’s. Very Disapoint about this.

Bathroom: It is also not big. Shower very good.

TV Room: Old TV (I thinks this TV have 20 years old or more), with some internationals channels. That’s OK to me.

Reception: Fluent in English, and every needs, they to the best to help you. Very Polites, nice Staff in Front desk overall.

Location: Not a Good Location. Tromso its a little city, but you need took a bus every time to go and comeback to Hotel. Every bus Trip, its 40 NOK (the voucher Works about 2 hours and you dont need pay again if you use bus in this time). I rent a car someday because I dont want waiting about 20 minutes in -10Celsius for a bus. The bus line to go and comeback to this hotel its a number 34.

Security: In Tromso, security is very high. Do not you feel insecure any second.

Taxi: From Airport to Hotel I spend 250 NOK. To expensive to me, to a ride about 1,5 kilometers.

Breakfest: Not a 5 Stars. Just like a Ibis Hotel. You have some breads, juices, fruits and eggs. A little simple for the price.

I recommend this hotel to everyone that have a limited budget. If you can do a Little more, take a Hotel in a Downtown. Will be very more comfortable to you.

I hope this review helps someone.
Cheers

I would endorse all the recent 5 star reviews......this may be a basic hotel in terms of toiletries, towels etc but the Sydspissen more than makes up for that by the friendliness & helpfulness of the staff, and by the quality of the breakfast & the all-day free teas/coffees. The situation out of town is perfect for northern lights viewing, and for a gentle walk along the shore line. We stayed mid February for a few days, and on a beautiful sunny Sunday it was lovely to see all the local families out in the snow, barbecuing, tobogganing etc. We got the impression that our fellow guests were also independent travellers, which helped create a much more relaxed atmosphere than those hotels with coachloads arriving & departing en masse. It's a bit of a boring walk into town, and the buses are expensive ( we didn't manage to sort out a pass) but I'm so glad we chose this little gem for our trip.

Sydspissen must be one of the most underrated hotels in Tromso. The staff are really friendly, the breakfasts are amazing, and there's a supermarket about a minute's walk from the hotel so you can shop on a budget and use the microwave in the hotel. There's also free tea (delicious) and coffee all day.

But best of all, we stayed there for 5 nights, and every single night we saw the Northern Lights, on the beach barely 50m from the hotel.

5 out of 5 for this place!
