If you want to experience something unique, then North Cape is great. If you are going there to "see" North cape, then it is not something great. The cold winds on a summer morning accompanied with a setting and rising sun at midnight is more spectacular to the mind and the nheart than the camera. Take the drive slowly, plan for good time and you can enjoy the experience. The reindeer on the way, the unique arctic vegetation, the numerous lakes. Weather is important. The best time to be there is between 2200 and 0100. It is good during the day too.

It really felt like I was at the end of the world when I visited North Cape as part of an excursion on my Leger Grand Explorer holiday/adventure around Scandinavia. Such a wild place but the experience was mind blowing as well as windy. The wind just added to the atmosphere and as it was during the Midnight Sun period the sky was even more impressive. To think you are standing at the edge of mainland Europe is mind boggling! The Exhibition Centre has been sympathetically built and is welcome if the wind gets too much or you start to feel the cold. I especially enjoyed the Sound and Light Room. The outside sculptures created by children of the world to represent Peace are also worth the short stroll to visit. I was quite sad when it was time to leave but the memory of my visit to this wild place will live with me forever

Despite the presence of three cruise ships in port we had no trouble renting a car dockside. The weather was good for this part of the world, no fog and not cold, so we decided to spend NOK1250 and rent a car for four hours to visit North Cape, there were five of us and we were given a comfortable Hyundai station wagon with automatic transmission, it was the same price for standard shift. With gas the total cost per person came to about US $48 and the admission to North Cape was about US $46, much cheaper than either the cruise ship tour price or the independent bus tour prices. It is a tourist zoo at North Cape but it is an experience to have looked out at the Barents Sea and just say you have been there. If you are a hiker and have time there is a trail just before you pay admission to the North Cape, it goes to the actual furthest north point which is not at North Cape attraction. I understand that the hike totals 18 kilometers. The drive was very worthwhile, many reindeer herds and dramatic scenery. we stopped to check out a "troll village" by a scenic pullout along side the road. Trolls live under rock cairns so when you see several cairns it must be a village! We had time to drive through Honningsvag, not a lot there, and to continue to the village on the other bay where a reindeer herd was lolling next to the road. We had a great time and loved being independent.

I went to the North Cape, in Norway to watch the midnight sun. The trip up to the cape was breathtaking, the cape and the sky is something you have to see it to believe it.

We arrived around 5 hours before midnight to find a complex of sorts, we found a cafe style building which reminded me of the motorway stops in England. I am talking back in 1970's, Everybody were passing the time of day (night) by playing board games, reading or chatting. 11.50pm everybody including us went to the most Northerly land point in Europe and waited for midnight! 12 o'clock and we all started taking photographs. No flash needed as it was as bright as noon! A must do experience.
