We've used Birkebeineren a few times for internal meetings, both on over-night arrangements and single-day events. Rooms and equipment are good, the staff is pleasant and lunch is good. I have no problems recommending them for groups up to 35-40.

We decided to stay here at short notice not having been to Norway before. Six adults stayed for 3 nights in one of the apartments which were clean, warm and comfortable. We took the breakfast option in the hotel and there was sufficient choice to not start the day hungry. The staff at the hotel were helpful and happy to assist in our daily search of the local ski slopes. The walk to the centre of Lilliehammer was about 10-15 minutes - but a pleasant one which worked up an appetite on the way down the hill and worked off the excess on the way home - very much uphill!
The accommodation did to a degree resemble a hostel type atmosphere but that said wasn't expensive and with a group of similar minded friends was just the job for what we needed at the end of the day. Our apartment had one double bedroom and 2 other bedrooms with bunk beds in - which was standard for the apartments when we asked. So as long as some don't mind sleeping in this fashion it all adds to the fun of the stay. We all enjoyed Lillehammer and the variation of slopes that the local resorts offered - especially Hafjell.

We stayed at the Brikebeineren Hotel while vacationing in Sweden. The location is great for the town. The room was very clean and of good size. Staff was helpful and friendly. Breakfast was generous and well presented..Over all a very good overnight stay . We were not there during the winter sports season so can not comment on that aspect of the area.

This isn't a bad place - it's just not a great place either.
The atmosphere is distinctly "hostel" type - but for that, it's great.
The reception was cool (the lady must have had a very bad day), but the guy the next morning was very friendly. The room was very big but hardly furnished (the old sofa was probably not moved since the Olympics in 1994)
Breakfast was nice.
The price is the same as other 4 star hotels, but the standard is not.
So I'd call it simply overpriced.
Location is not great but acceptable.
If you have a car, you will probably appreciate the free parking

Nice location, not hard to find near the ski jump in Lillhammer. Stora Torget area just a short walk, maybe a kilometer, down the hill. Lots of hiking very near by. Apartments are in good condition and have lots of space. Internet service is weak at best, and sometimes not available. Staff is very nice and they try hard to accomodate. Laundry facilities are so so with dryers that do not really dry. Expect to use drying racks provided in each apartment. As with most apartments, these apartments are self catering which means no maid service and no breakfast included. I did not stay in the hotel section. I think this is different there.

Overall, I would stay there again..

Stayed here for 1 night on our way to Oslo. We had a bit of trouble finding the hotel cause we followed the birkebeiren sign which wasn't for the hotel. However once we arrived we had a nice surprise because we were upgraded to a deluxe room since they had lots of room. Room was huge with sitting room and kitchenette area and 2 TV. Lillehammer centre is quite near though a bit uphill. However we had a car so it was no problem. The area surrounding the hotel is very nice since it's located in the olympic park and it was also very quiet since it was beginning of September. Had a small playing field outside the hotel too. Breakfast was very good too. Some might complain about having to clean the table after but it's such a trivial thing to do that it really didn't matter. All in all it was a great and comfortable stay.

We stayed at the end of March for some late season skiing. We opted for an apartment in the grounds of the hotel. The apartment was very clean and well laid out - 1 double bedroom and two rooms with bunkbeds. The bunkbed rooms were small but perfectly OK as we had only 1 adult per room (I think there are larger apartments available for 6 adults). It also had 2 shower rooms which was great as our party consisted of 3 girls (but there are no hair dryers!!!). Finally, there is a small kitchen with cooker, fridge freezer and dishwasher and a dining table and fairly large lounge area with TV.

The hotel is around 10 minutes by taxi from Lillehammer train/bus station - costs around 100NOK. It is walkable but uphill!

A bus goes from (and to) the hotel to Hafjell ski area but only a few times per day - from memory, there is a bus around 9am and the next is at 11am so you need to be careful of your timing to and from the slopes. The bus stops at the train/bus station (where you might have to transfer) and buses leave from there around every hour. One morning, the bus didn't arrive at all so we ended up trudging into town and getting a taxi - which cost about 500NOK - luckily we had met other guests at the hotel who were in the same position who were happy to share the cost.

There is no evening meal, other than as pre-arranged for groups. Breakfast costs around 85NOK and is pentiful buffet style with full self-service. There is also a small shop beside reception but it sells only sodas and snacks really. I think you can also order beer from reception but we didn't put this to the test. You can also order pizza from a local delivery place but it is really expensive (but very tasty).

All in all, the apartments represent great value for money, particularly for small groups.

The slopes at Hafjell were great - very wide and even the black runs were acccessible (and I normall avoid black runs at all costs). The pistes were in good condition but the weather was COLD - much colder than the Alps typically are in Feb. Most of the runs are accessed by chair lift but there is one gondola and a few tows. The slopes were pretty quiet all weekend and we stayed until Monday evening to pack in as much skiing as possible and the slopes were deserted on Monday which was a great way to end the weekend. The Hafjell area is very well organised - ski lockers can be hired which were big enough for three and the locker room also has showers available.

As you might expect, the food on the mountain is expensive and the price of alcohol is astronomical.
