First time in Vienna and the Purstner sounds like a must. As I said, food and portions were good but service non-existant!!! Such a pity...

Four of went on our first night in Vienna, having a recommendation from our travel company. The restaurant was busy but service was prompt and attentive. The waiters were friendly and spoke excellent English. The decor has a hunting theme, with stuffed boars heads and other creatures in a panelled room. It's great fun. The food - well, traditional simple meals with good quality ingredients. Between us we tried the chicken with herbs, traditional wiener schnitzel, and calves liver. All generous portions and well cooked. For desserts , the apple strudel and the ice cream dumpling were exactly as they should be. The house wine was reasonably priced and quaffable. Not fine dining, but a really pleasant meal with friendly and efficient service. 85 euros for four of us for 2 courses and wine, in a city centre location. Great value for money.

We walked into Purstner on a Friday night around 8pm and were given a table for two. Restaurant was busy but they were able to squeeze us into a small table, lucky for us as this was a great meal.

The restaurant is heavily decorated in a traditional Austrian manner, creating a fun venue for families, groups of friends or couples. Waiter was a bit jolly and friendly, yet maintained the typically efficient Viennese standard in his work.

As for our meal, we found food servings to be very large, would have been easy to have shared each meal between the two of us. First, we ordered the Weiner Schnetzel (16.50 euro) that was served as two pieces. The schnitzel was prepared well and tasted as expected - tender veal covered in crispy bread crumb. Was not the best weiner schnitzel we've ever had but good enough and went well with the large serving of parsley potatoes. All in all, a very good dish (rating 3.75 of 5).

We also tried the spare ribs, which this restaurant is somewhat famous for (14.60 euro). This came as two racks of well-marinated ribs with a large serving of roasted potatoes and kraut. Everything was just spot on delicious. Meat came right off the bone and just tasted great (rating 5 of 5). We managed to team up and finish the ribs and were thinking about them the next morning, curious if they would open up so we go back have another round. We just don't find ribs like this in Hong Kong, too bad for us!

Would have loved to have tried a dessert here the mains were so good. Unfortunately, neither of us had enough tummy space after the schnitzel and ribs.

Overall, a great meal, probably our favourite from this trip to Vienna and a place we will certainly return to when visiting the city next.
