“Sri Lanka cuisine”

Nice and simple restaurant with specialities from Sri Lanka. Don't be afraid to ask the waiter how to best combine the different dishes.

“A pleasant surprise!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

This restaurant is just a stone's throw away from our hotel, The Levante Parliament. We discovered it as our feet led us to destinations unknown. When we got there, we were greeted by the friendly owners and were immediately seated inside, near a window, where we were able to comfortably people watch without being roasted by the sun.

As we'd never had Sri Lankan cuisine before, we put ourselves in the hands of our server, and asked her to bring us her best recommendation.

We were not disappointed.

What we got was some of the HOTTEST (meaning spicy) food we'd *ever* had...I'm taking sinus clearing hot...yet it was flavorful and delicious.

We enjoyed it so much, we returned the next day.

We asked for it to not be as spicy, and that was a mistake. The food just didnt seem the same. It was good, but not delicious. The first day was delicious.

Overall, great food, great value, great location.

“Starters were poor”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2013

We enjoyed the meal overall but were a bit disappointed with the starters on the set menu we chose. They were a 'not sure if it was fish' ball, a 'where is the tomato' soup, and two different pancakes? with a chutney. The main course was much better and made the meal a success.

“Spice up your evening! Go Spicy hot!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

When we first entered this Curry Insel restaurant, we were hit by the aromatic smells of spices and curry. The wonderful smells tickled our taste buds and we were getting more hungry as we looked around at the colorful food being brought to the other dinner guests. The restaurant was not very large, and the rooms were nicely decorated. There was a large indian movie poster on the backwall, and yellow lightings cast soft lights over the room. The atmosphere was a kind of busy enjoyment.
I heard about this Sri Lankan restaurant from my friends who have been there. Their ravings about the good spicy food served here convinced me to give it a try. It is not easy to find a good curry house in Vienna, even though there is a small community of Pakistanis, Indians and Sri Lankans here. I was one of their regular customers while I was living in Vienna.
The service was fast and good, despite the place being quite packed and busy. The food took some time to arrive but then if you order starters, you will not feel it. The wait was worth it because the curry rice was really good. It's been long since I've eaten a good curry. I would highly recommend this place to my other friends. Since it is quite popular, it is better to reserve a table in advance.

Favorite Dish: My favorites are the Garlic Naan bread, Thosai and Spicy Chicken Curry. Thosai is a kind of indian pancake, and eaten served with curry sauce. I ate my thosai with spicy chicken, which was good and really hot and spicy.

The restaurant informed us that if we want really spicy food, we have to say we want the "original taste". Then the restaurant will cook the curry according to their original standard - i.e. really chilli-hot and spicy. But beware, Sri Lankans level of hotness could be too much for those who are not used to chili-spicy-hotness. Get ready some sweets or order Mango Lassi (yogurt drink) to soothe your burning mouth!

For good value, go on Sunday for the excellent Brunch (all you can eat) where you get selection of curries, breads and sweets. Book a table in advance. Very popular!

Address: Lenaugasse 4, 1080 Vienna, Austria

Take the underground U2 to Rathaus station, go up to the street level, and look for Cafe Rathaus. Then walked to the behind of the Cafe and you will find Curry Insel Restaurant.

“Not for a Sunday lunch”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

We went there for lunch on a Sunday. On Sundays they happen to offer a Sunday brunch. Once inside we discovered that their Sunday brunch was in reality a set menu at € 11. There was not a buffet but you could ask as much as you wanted of the set menu (kind of all you can eat). After some appetizer (average quality and small portions) rice, chicken curry and usual sauces were served. Everything was in small portions and not enough for our party so we had to ask for more curry and rice. The new portions, along with the first ones, made finally an average portion of curry for each of us. The quality was not high, chicken curry was not different from any other chicken curry you can taste in any Indian restaurant. Other things were in so small portions I cannot express a reliable opinion. I can only say I didn’t like their strange choice of all you can eat of a set menu (calling it brunch). I wouldn’t go back. If you want to go try on evenings.
