Ah yeah, come on in, feel the warm atmosphere in the dim light, the smell of cinnamon in the air, be seated by a classy viennese waiters in a suit. Cafe Hawelka is probably the best and nearest choice to experience the viennese coffee house feeling.

On the other hand, it is kind of small and hard to get a free seat - no reservations accepted. There's no menu on the table - I'm not sure if there even is a menu - I felt kinda expected to know what I want. If you speak german, the waiter may suggest something, if you don't, your best choice will be a "melange" (EUR 3,80. Vienna style cappuccino).

Like a real viennese café, Hawelka has the feel of a huge living room where you hang out talking with friends, reading the papers and of course have a coffee or beer. This is the real thing, not the fancy Sacher/Demel type of café set up for tourists. Highly recommended.

Called in for coffee before we had to leave town, and could have lingered longer. The coffee is excellent and the cafe is managed by a very efficient team. It is a comfortable way to people watch and immerse in a part of old Vienna, dark wood floor and well used sofas add to the welcoming atmosphere. Can not reconcile our excellent experience with some of the reviews, tables do get reserved.

Be aware that empty tables does not mean a seat for tourists and no reasons given.
Rude male waiters , especially if you only want coffee and dessert; paying tourists appear to be an intrusion into the waiters' pretentious circle of friends.

The place is typical, we took with my son a hot chocolate with cream (logical in Vienna) and a strudel. The chocolate had noting particular and the price for all was very expensive : 14€ !
I'm quite sure our waiter scammed us.. :-(
So I will not commander the place unless you are Austrian or speak very good German.
