Definitely a Viennese icon. In the heart of the first district a great place to browse, watch them baking or have some good coffee and a piece of rich torte. Well worth a stop even if you don't eat!!

At Demel we had some excellent cakes and the best apple strudel I have ever tasted. Loved that much more than Sacher cake in Cafe Sacher. Nice tables on the second floor and good service.

Yes, I remember when I use to visit “Demel” and enjoy the smell of bake goods and good cup of coffee and pastry. Then the word got out to the tourist and Trip-Advisor and now you wish you could turn the clock back. I still give it good rating compared too othe coffe shops I have been. But do the increase awareness of this place it standards have gone down a bit. We stop by in April and had good service and we ordered several items on the menu and shared with each other and they were all positive.
Question comes up if you find a good restaurant or coffee shop do you share with Trip-Advisor and let get over-run!

The building and shop area are charming and quirky, but cakes and chocolates are overpriced and better samples can be found elsewhere.
It is not bad but it is not good as one expects due to its reputation.
We had a light lunch with cakes – asparagus in season but not tender (in had asparagus later for dinner at another place and it was remarkably superior) and the Sacher torte was unimpressive (had one next day at Dallmayr @ Merkur Hoher Markt much better.
Waiting staff was the only good thing.

Booked a table several months before a special birthday trip for my wife. On arrival. The shop was mobbed and we were hastily pointed upstairs. No reserved table. The waitress was bordering on rude and pointed to a table and said we had 40 minutes before it was needed for someone else. The upstairs room was dingy with no atmosphere. We left. Fortunately, we found a table on an outside terrace at Hotel Sacher were the tea and cakes were excellent and the staff were efficient and friendly. I know which afternoon stop I would recommend! You could also try Gerstner's where the cakes were also very tasty.
