Description: The epitome of a Viennese coffee house In 1873 Franz Landtmann opened “Vienna’s most elegant cafe location“. Even today, the Landtmann ist the epitome of Viennese coffee house culture and one of the last grand cafes along Vienna’s Ringstraße. Come and enjoy the wonderful world of Viennese hospitality and tradition, as have numerous prominent guest over the decades, from Sigmund Freud to Gustav Mahler or Hillary Clinton.

Lunch at the Café Lantmann in Vienna to get the real Austrian café feeling. It fulfilled all our expectations. Elegance, white cloth at the table, silverware and discrete waiters fulfilling our smallest wishes.
The food are mostly traditional Austrian, with a fantastic Wienerscnitzel. Not the cheapest in town, but then again, it’s worth it!

The Cafe Landtmann is an institution in Vienna. Close to the parliament, university and the famous Burgtheater, "the Landtmann" is where you encounter the (real or imagined) cultural and political elite. And loads of tourists!
Still, the interior is very nice and classy, classical Kaffeehaus style, the waiters are polite and efficient (and not snotty, as some waiters still are in Vienna, to it has improved a lot), the food fresh and good and the pastry delicious.
The Landtmann is massively overpriced for Vienna, though. The central location, the clientele and its longstanding tradition are the main reason for it. It is a good place to meet people for a coffee, a glass of wine or a meal. When it gets warmer, the terrace outside is very popular, a place to watch people and to be seen. This is certainly not a coffee house for quiet contemplation or for reading the newspaper in peace and quiet - there are much better cafes for that.

We were told to visit Cafe Landtmann, so we thought we'd have a nice meal here. The atmosphere was nice, the waiters seemed pleasant and kind. The food however wasn't exactly amazing, and could have had the same quality at any regular restaurant with a cost a tenth of the price at Landtmann. I thought I'd go for the Schnitzel, and ended up feeling that it tasted very much like the nuggets at McDonalds.

As a resident of Vienna, I tend to avoid these places. I was prejudiced that tourist magnets cannot be good and merely rip off the uninformed masses. Well, I recently went with a group and you know what: the food IS terrible. I was right - very high prices for low quality ingredients.
Our salad has spent many days in the fridge, discolored leaves. Herbs just dark and slimy. Ham of very questionable texture, eggs with a strange smell. Soups excessively salty. Tepid industrial bread.
The service is condescending and makes you wait and wait.
The pastries are fine, but they are exactly the same in other viennese cafés for 10 to 20% less cost.

We ate here late afternoon after a full day's sightseeing in Schonbrunn, on the recommendation of a friend. What a great choice - the place was busy but the bustle added to the atmosphere, together with the elegant setting and the attentive service. Excellent goulash & steak mains, followed by strudel and coffee. All great quality and served quickly. Well worth a visit if you're in central Vienna.
