“Rathaus - Beautiful Gothic style building, lovely to see at night”
Reviewed April 13, 2014

Not far from the Austrian Parliament, situated on Rathausplatz is Neues Rathuas (Town Hall), which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, particularly at night when the facade is illuminated with floodlights.

Built by Friedrich von Schmidt in 1883 in Gothic style, Rathaus is just a lovely building to see. The facade with its vaulted arches, statues, bell tower and minor towers make a lovely views and good reason to snap off a few pictures with your camera. We enjoy seeing Rathaus during the day with blue skies behind it. However, at night the building is stunning when it is lit by floodlights. This is when we most enjoy seeing Rathaus.

If you visit during the winter months, you can also see a ice skating rink and skating trail that weaves through Rathausplatz, just in front of Rathaus building. A Christmas market is also held at this spot during the holiday season, making it particularly nice to visit then.

Overall, we very much like the Rathaus building and have enjoyed seeing it several times during trips to Vienna. Combined with other impressive attractions in the area like the Parliament Building, Burgtheatre, Volksgarten and nearby Kuntsthistorisches, Naturhistorisches and Museum Quarter museums, this is a lovely building to see when you are in Vienna.

“Lovely location, food nothing to write home about”
Reviewed March 28, 2014 via mobile

This restaurant is located in a beautiful historic building, has friendly waiting staff but has a very limited menu and food and wine are so-so. Prices are very reasonable. If you are looking for a quick bite or the Austrian experience of eating a schnitzel, by all means this is the place for you, are you looking for a more sophisticated or culinary experience, please don't.

“Take your Passport for a Free Guided Tour”
Reviewed March 27, 2014

What an iconic building ! Situated behind the Parliament Building, it dominates the skyline and has a wonderful history.
Take your passport an exchange it for the loan of a audio guide and be shown around this magnificent building that had the largest hall in Europe in its day and the tallest 'spire' in Vienna - thanks to the statue and flag-staff on top of the actual spire.

“Take advantage of the free tour!”
Reviewed March 19, 2014

Not much seems to be free in this town, but getting a tour of the Rathaus is! The times are very limited, they offer them only on Mon, Wed and Fri at 1pm. But it is free, informative and interesting. The tour lasts one hour.

The tour is in German, but audio guides are available in English for free (just need a photo ID as a deposit). Our tour guide spoke English and occasionally made some comments in English and was also open to questions in English. She was very energetic, nice and knowledgeable about the building. We received some historical information and learned a bit about the architecture. We heard interesting information about past mayors of the city as well.

Note that the entrance to the tourist info hall is from the "back" of the building, the opposite side from the big park. You can also access it from the right (looking at it from the front, east) and then walk through the courtyard to get to it.

The Rathaus is obviously an impressive building from the outside, but it is also very beautiful from the inside. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend putting this tour on your itinerary!

“Check out the kids' skating rink”
Reviewed March 12, 2014

Surrounded by 3 skating rinks - the one for little kids is great fun to see. Each child had a small penguin-shaped statue to assist them to stand and skate.

The building is another of Vienna's many architectural masterpieces, and you can tour it for free.
