The 5 Euro price is way too much for so little. The single room is filled with plastic flowers and only a few butterflies. I have been to many Butterfly Houses/Gardens and this one is last on the list.

“Nice but small”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Schmetterling Haus Wien is a small butterfly house in an awesome location. It is situated in the Hofburg complex between the Burgarten and the Albertina, alongside the Palmenhaus restaurant. When competing on location, it is a clear winner.

Inside, Schmetterlinghaus is a tropical centre. It is nice, with lots of bold green plants as well as plenty of fake ones for the butterflies to enjoy. The water feature including a waterfall is pleasing. As it is tropical it is quite hot. Heading in on a cold day is an easy way to warm up but it can be quite a stark temperature difference. The free coat rack comes highly recommended.

The price is fairly reasonable. €6 for an adult. Free entry under the age of three.

The path around the house is ok. It is not beautiful but works well. The footing is sure though overtaking opportunities are limited. The bridge vantage point is not especially well maintained, the slight magnification in the glass on the bridge is clever but not clean enough.

The butterflies themselves are fine. One word of caution - if you are the sort of person who is afraid of butterflies then just do not come in, do not annoy the rest of us by jerking erratically when one flies close to you. There are not huge numbers of butterflies and they are fragile so do expect to see some lying around. For some reason the butterflies were not especially colourful in early March, mainly being black with some splashes of colour. It is not the same as seeing them in a more natural environment.

“Small, but attractive especially for kids”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

Plenty of butterflies flying around currently. There are two places with cocoons where you can, if you are lucky, see how butterfly emerges.
It is a "tropical climate" place so expect to feel too warm in winter clothes. But if outside is too cold, than butterfly spotting is a nice substitute for warm coffe.

“My favourite place in Vienna”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

I have been in Vienna many times (for love) but I still remember the first time I went alone, it was snowing a lot, it was extremely cold and I found this place by chance.

It was a wonderful experience. It is a small greenhouse where you can walk around surrounded by butterflies. I was amazed and spent more than 1 hour there.

Since then, I have been there many many times and I'm always still amazed.

Small fee.

Good to visit in winter, when it's so cold outside!

Romantic and good for children as well :)

“Nice but overpriced”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

It was pouring with rain so we were looking for things to do indoors and we ended up at the Schmetterlinghaus. The building itself is quite impressive and the butterflies fascinated but it's quite expensive given how much there is to see.

Our favourite part was watching the new butterflies emerging from their cocoons and gradually unfurling their wings. Not something you get to see every day.
