We were on a last minute trip and didn't have time to do our homework. We wanted to go to a concert and spontaneously decided to go for this one. The touts hang out around the Hofburg and the Opera wearing long capes. A discount of 10€pp was offered with no pressure.

In the end it was not that which was promised. Instead of the 12 or so musicians in the brochure there were 7. And instead of the promised 90 minutes we were able to get out of the stuffy room into the fresh air after about 65 minutes.

The musicians were, as far as I can tell, competent and it was entertaining. I'm guessing you can do much better by doing your homework before you leave and avoiding the touts on the street.

Decided to go to this Mozart/Strauss concert on an impulse while passing the palace. The musicians were great. Very talented. Very enthusiastic. A good mixed programme of well known and less well known pieces and all within 90 min show that prevented anyone getting too restless. Unfortunately the show was set in a very basic room which didn't add to the experience in the way a rococo palace setting might have been expected to. There was almost aggressive hard sell from the cloakroom people who demanded we leave our very light jackets on a cold December and pay for the pleasure. Very small token drinks available which had to be 'enjoyed' very quickly. While I once again stress the music is great and the musicians are fantastic with their dancing and singing colleagues adding a lot to the performance; it seems that some management company is running them and doesn't do a good job of the rest of the experience.

The room and the cast were nothing like the photo on the brochure. We had asked very specific questions about these two things before purchasing tickets and I feel the answers we got were totally dishonest. No one was wearing a wig! The room looked quite bare and there were not as many performers as we were told. Tickets for VIP seats were discounted to 39 Euros per person. Only one couple danced; one opera singer and about 6 musicians (we were told there would be 12 -14!) Beware of the touts all over town who are selling these tickets and to other similar venues. Try to get tickets for the Hofburg Palace instead for a real show. This one is a tourist trap! The room at the Palais Palffy, looks nothing like a real palace either. The entertainers did their best with a very limited stage.

The 24-th of august - rather cold for summer, drizzling and raining could spoil all the impression but... what luck it was running into a seller of tickets to the concert which was on in the Palace mentioned in the 14th century archive files and was owned by Count Paul Eberhard Palffy von Erdod in 15-th century and Wolfgan Mozard gave his concert 1762!!! Now it is one of the most beautiful palaces in Vienna and the best Mozart's and Strauss's music can be heard here. That day in Programm there were Suzanna's Aria from the Marriage of Figaro, Turkish March, Roses from the South and ... On the Beautiful Blue Danube!!! It was so splendid!!! I am still under the great impression of Vienna and Vienna Music Soul. It is worth visiting even when it rains!

It was interesting to read the other Trip Advisor review of the Vienna Walzer concert at the Palais Palffy, and we can perhaps offer a different perspective. If you are looking for a first rate classical concert and willing to pay serious money then you would not even consider this - you would no doubt book to see the Vienna Philarmonic Orchestra or something similar.

However if you are a tourist with no great knowledge of classical music, just wanting a short evening out, it fits the bill quite well. We had an hour or so's performance from eight musicians who, to our less than expert ears, were very good. There were two dancers who performed at a few stages too, and an opera singer.

The room was small - we went for the cheap seats which cost EUR 29 each (the street sellers quickly offer a reduction on the EUR 39 starting price) which if you get there fairly early give a reasonable view. There is a small bar at which you can get a drink during the fairly short intermission.

So in summary, if classical music is your passion this probably isn't for you. If you are a humble tourist wanting to get a taste of Mozart and Strauss, it's fair value for money. As is often the case you do get what you pay for and this wasn't particularly expensive.
