Salads, nuts, freshly baked breads, chips and sauces, hors d'oevres, jams, butters, creams, meats fresh and cured, fish fish and smoked, sweets.... Another piece of heaven on Vienna (the other is Julius Meinl).

Great, rich and wide range supermarket. Highly recommended for groceries, both regular and special. Fairly priced and yoy can find anything you want here.

My wife and I were staying at an Airbnb apartment around the corner, so were thrilled to find a large, full service market in the historic area. There are several floors with elevators so you can take your grocery cart. Just an amazing selection of staples as well as chocolates, fish, wines, bakery and other items. There is also a café. We did full shopping here to prepare breakfasts and a dinner in our apartment. But the clerk behind the pastry counter even got to know us because we kept coming back for more treats. Next to the historic clock not far from St. Stephens Square, this is a great place to see and browse even if you are not looking to do real grocery shopping. You will surely come out with some treat.

We went for a tea and cake. The whole store was full of beautiful Christmas decorations. Service was a little slow even though the cafe wasn't very busy. Cakes were tasty but we both found them far too sweet (and believe me, I like sweet stuff). So, since they were quite big, we could have easily done with just sharing one, as towards the end it became a bit sickly.

We came acros Merkur Hoher Markt by chance and were blown away by their attractive displays, the wide range of foods and drinks on offer, the quality and the reasonableness of the pricing.

The shop has the feel of Harrod's food hall or Fortum and Mason, yet without the premium prices associated with those London outlets.

Tired of Austrian restaurant food, which tends to be meat-based, heavy and without veggies, it was a no-brainer (and a relief!) for us to buy some salads and fruit for an al fresco supper.

Merkur also sells sandwiches and lunchtime lighter bites so it's a great place to go at lunchtime as a lighter and healthier alternative to restaurant dining.

But worth a visit just to window shop and be amazed by what's on offer.
