The jesuit church embraces you with an over the top art deco style that is refreshingly stunning. The midnight mass on Christmas eve was incredible.

“Church of the Jesuits: Stunningly beautiful interior, make sure to see Pozzo's slanted dome ceiling fresco”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2013

The Church of the Jesuits (Universitatskirche) is one of the most beautiful churches in Vienna and one of our personal favourites to visit within the historic city centre area.

The church was built in the early 17th century upon the site of an early chapel. However, the Baroque appearance which dominates its interior was added by Andrea Pozzo in 1703 per request by Emperor Leopold I. Upon the completion of his work, the church was re-dedicated to Assumption of Mary, having previously been dedicated to Saint Ignazio Loyola and Francis Xavier.

While the outside facade of the church is rather subtle and unassuming, the interior is extraordinarily ornate. The single nave is heavily yet tastefully decorated, featuring coloured marble pillars, green solomonic columns, nice wall paintings, plenty of gilded ornaments.

For us, the feature attraction of the Church of the Jesuits has to be the ceiling fresco masterpiece by Pozzo called the - 'The trompe l'oeil dome'. The fresco is gorgeous and included a slanted dome painting which creates the illusion that you are looking up into a dome, yet the fresco is painted on a flat surface. This is similar to his ceiling fresco at the Church of Saint Ignazio di Loyola in Rome.

In the end, we have really enjoyed visits to the Jesuits Church during trips to Vienna and include this as a 'must see' church visit in the historic city centre, a place we will always try to make time for during our stays in the city.

“Beautiful with great acoustics.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

This church is a must see in Vienna. The interior is more lovely than many of the larger cathedrals. We visited early Sunday morning and the choir was practicing for a Mozart concert later that day. It was one of the highlights of our visit.
