On route to the Albertina we saw the banners outside the Dorotheum. We assumed that it was a musuem but was not listed in my guidebook. We had to investigate and what a delightful surprise. A stunning building over 4 floors filled with an incredible range of antiques, fine art and collectibles. But its main purpose is an auction house and as the previous contributor reported it is an odd experience to walk around what appears to be a top class musuem and gallery, but that everything is for sale.

Whilst you may not want to go out of your way to visit Dorotheum, if you are nearby and spot the large red banners it is worth popping in. There is a well appointed cafe on the second floor and if you have limited mobility there are lifts to all floor.

This Auction house is a kind of museum and it's free. You even can by some of the things directly. In this Palais Dorotheum there was a display of things from the Kaiserhaus (Sissi and Franz Joseph) as the auction was in two days. There even were some things we hadn't seen in the Sissi-museum in the Hofburg (her silk riding trousers), others we had seen. As there are different auctions every week, 4 to six times a week, you don't know what you will see unless you go to the website (www. dorotheum.com). A week before the auction you can see the things from Monday to Friday 10 AM till 6 PM, and on Saturday 9 AM till 5 PM. You can walk in and have a look around. On the ground floor, there is a large display room behind the stairs, When you go ustairs, there is a room for jewellery and much more. The address: Dorotheergasse 17, 1010 Wien
