Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design
Ranked #7 of 359 Hotels in Vienna
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 4, 2013

We booked the hotel in August, based on it's No.1* ranking in Tripadvisor. It was even more important than usual to us to have a good hotel, as our friends had never been to Vienna before. Our correspondence with the hotel was efficient and good-humoured (even humorous!) and this continued on check-in and throughout our stay. The staff: reception; cleaners; breakfast waiters cannot be faulted. I asked about travel tickets around Vienna; they were purchased and in our room within hours!
The room itself was modern and very spacious, just as described by other reviewers. We had room 206, which overlooked the breakfast atrium. Normally, I like individual toiletries, but the 'wine based' toiletries in dispensers were lovely.
The breakfast was very generous (included in our rate) and it was nice to try the different wines in the evening. On New Year's Eve in the court yard there was a fun tradition of 'melting the lead to foretell the future'.
We really like the location, the Josefstadt, which seems quite bohemian - there are plenty of bars and restaurants. We recommend O Cristos (Greek restaurant about 50 metres to the left of the hotel) Alte Backstubel (again to the left about 150 metres - across main road) Cafe Eiles is one of the 'original cafes' and just by the tram stop. BUT It is about 20 minutes walk to the cathedral and you will see so much.
Honestly, what more could you ask for?!
*It seems to me that once a hotel gains No. 1 rating, some reviewers take delight in finding the most silly fault to 'knock it down' e.g. "The hotel is not on the Ring". well, no it isn't, but it hasn't sneakily moved!

When I booked the hotel it was rated #1 on tripadvisor, by the time we traveled it had dropped to #5. We used the hotel transfers (euros 37, paid directly to the driver) and were a little worried about the hotel's location as it seemed a little far from the main action. The hotel was in a small street in a quiet area. Check in was pleasant and the staff was extremely friendly. We were most happy with the room, it was spacious, separate WC, open plan shower/bathroom (perhaps not so suitable for friends) and was very comfortable. The room probably could've been cleaned a bit more thoroughly, eg there was an used tissue in our bin when we checked in. Our fears about the location was not founded though, the U metro was a short 5 minute stroll away, and then from here, 2 stops to the main city centre. Dead easy. The only downside was there's not alot of restaurants/convenience stores nearby other than a Mexican joint opposite the hotel. Reception offers bottled water for only 1 euro.
The elevator was on the first floor, so you'll need to carry your luggage up from the ground floor to the first floor (though I'm sure the hotel staff can help you with this). For the rates charged by this hotel we definitely thought it was good value and would recommend it to anyone.

A family-run boutique hotel with a focus on design and a wine theme in all rooms.

On the positive side, the service and staff were excellent - just the right balance of friendly efficiency without being intrusive; the hotel was spotlessly clean and the rooms were chic and well designed with all the amedities you'd expect. The breakfast was brilliant - a staggering array of cheeses, hams, pickles, cereals, yoghurts, cakes and pastries.

Quite expensive but I guess that's Vienna! I stayed over New Year and can thoroughly recommend Vienna and this hotel as a great place to visit.

Room Tip: The only slight negative is these great bedrooms with their open plan design isn't ideal for fam...

The hotel is tucked away off the main roads on an unlikely back street but don't let that put you off - entering via a big traditional facade you walk up a concrete staircase to the first floor where the ultra modern reception sits behind glass sliding doors.

The hotel is family run and the staff couldn't have been friendlier - very welcoming and really helpful, even calling around several restaurants to find us a table on New Year's Eve.

The hotel is wine themed, each room focuses on a different wine and there are bottles in the room for you to purchase - though these are pricey.

The rooms are very modern and nicely done with a huge attention to every design detail. The walk in shower and sink area in our room was open plan with the toilet over the other side of the room, so the layout was a little weird but our friend's room across the hall had everything together.

Breakfast was amazing and again, so much attention to detail. More cheeses, meats and jams than you could shake a stick at and some beautiful little cakes, macaroons and pastries. There was also a cooked breakfast option but no menu which was a bit of a shame.

In the evening the breakfast area turns into a wine bar - if you're into your wine you'll appreciate the list of wines with a focus on Austrian grapes and the staff really know their stuff.

We stayed here on a Weihnachtmarkt visit in early December. My husband searched the internet and read Trip Advisor reviews before deciding on this hotel. He wanted a centrally-placed (but quiet) hotel that did not break the bank, but gave us a little pampering; it did not disappoint. As we booked early we were given an special rate.
Our room was extremely quiet, at the back of the hotel; we were impressed with the shower. We arrived with only hand luggage and were relieved to see plenty of shower/hair gel and body lotion. The bed was comfortable and a decent safe (with in-built power socket to charge your laptop) meant that we could safely store our passports etc.
We walked everywhere, visited 5 Christmas markets in 2 days, and went to a Viennese concert just round the corner from our hotel on our last evening which was absolutely superb.
We did not indulge in the full-monty breakfast; the Viennese breakfast was more than adequate with an excellent choice of cereals, juice, bread and cakes. It was even possible to have proper English breakfast tea in a pot!
One thing that we felt that the hotel could improve on is to make it clear on their website that they serve meals in the evening. We popped in for a coffee the first evening after eating out at Fromme Helene (see other review) and were surprised to find folks eating. The next evening I tried the lovely antipasti for one but could not finish it; my husband had the black pudding which was also very good, “the best black pudding I have eaten” to quote him.
Service was very good throughout, although if you are not a German speaker, English seems to be the default language even for those, like myself, who wished to practise the language a little. Having said that, there is a distinct difference between German (hochdeutsch) and Austrian German!
There are far too many things to do in Vienna to remotely be able to cover them in 3 days, but we did enjoy our stay immensely. We would like to return in the summer and see some of the beautiful gardens; if we do return, we will seriously consider staying at this hotel again.

Thank you trip advisor reviewers! This hotel was amazing. Stayed there with my husband and two dogs for 3 nights. Great location and within walking distance to major sites. The room was huge and the bathroom was massive! Slippers and robes were also provided. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

My family and I just stayed here mainly on the recommendation of Tripadvisor but also for the convenience of the hotel to the Christmas markets and the major sites. We arrived late and after negotiating a few steps to the foyer with our luggage, checked in to 2 large adjoining rooms with fantastic showers that made the long journey from Sydney a distant memory.
The breakfast was extensive and the rooms were ultra quiet for a great sleep in. The staff were very helpful and even provided a hamper for our trip to Budapest on a Sunday as all shops were closed.
It deserves its good reviews for the class of hotel that it is.
