“A must for everybody staying in Vienna”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

The hotel is situated in the "Spittelberg" area of Vienna, just off the centre but reachable by foot from the "Hofburg" in 10-15 minutes.
Great building, ernormous rooms with high ceilings and modern tasteful design. The artwork in the hotel is original and worth appreciating.
The cherry on the cake is the personnel. They are absolutely fantastic, professional and helpful at any time making every guest feel special and absolutely welcome.
For those who are into breakfast, that would be reason enough to book it!

Central to most cultural and urban attractions of the city via transit or walking, this apartment building partially converted to a boutique hotel allows the traveller to mix with locals and to experience what living in this city might be like. The experience is enhanced with a sophisticated (not over-done) decor, good mix of art on the walls, great breakfast and lovely common rooms. Perhaps the best aspect of our stay was the staff service. Everyone was friendly, caring and accommodating. The list of amenities is not extensive but all the essentials are covered. Good value, nice location - recommended.

Room Tip: Quiet street so roof garden orientation is not essential - just prefered. If on street side, choose...

I found that your experience will vary by the room you get. The hotel is a converted apartment building and each apartment is of different size and amenities. I liked my room (22) because it faces the street and I got a very nice view of the church across the street. I also liked the space (I was alone) since I like a chair (a bit low for my back). TV was directly across from bed, not chair. Bathroom was a hoot. It must have been a former closet since it is about 3 x 7. Yet, they got the shower 3x3 maybe, and the toilet and sink in. If your girth is larger, this would not be possible for you.
The staircase with candles at night is a great feature. Breakfast rooms are special, treating you like wealthy patrons. When was the last time you had breakfast on a coffee table sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper - yeah, at home. That's how you feel here, close to home.

Room Tip: Ask for the kind of room you would like.

I spent 4 nights here during a business trip. The hotel is one subway stop and a 10 minute walk from Karlsplatz, the center. Set in a period building, composed of several floors, the hotel feels both cozy and elegant. Each room (or mine) is converted into a single hotel room. The bathroom is literally "installed" in the room. It is all glass (i was glad to be alone) and it doesn't work with the architecture. The look and feel is mechanical/machine. It's functional but hardly elegant. LIkewise, the furniture in my room was either cheap plastic (one chair) and a glass table which i rather liked for its size. The internet functioned well (I had a great skype conversation). The highlight of each day is the elegant breakfast rooms which are a series of rooms that have couches, plush chairs and tables. The food was quite good (fresh squeezed orange juice was lacking) but the cappuccino was made not in an italian machine but one of those german "hit the button and the machine does it all" machines. Service was sublime. The rates seem quite reasonable for what you get. I would return.

Don't let the rather inconspicuous entry and second floor reception area to a hotel that was once an apartment building fool you!

Hotel Altstadt is a funky, artsy, well run boutique hotel with artwork of the owner displayed throughout. Our room/suite, once an apartment, was very spacious and welcoming. The staff is very well trained and eager to please each guest starting with the moment of your arrival.

The Altstadt's personal touch begins each day with a very high quality breakfast offering and their high energy breakfast attendant who is eager to meet any special requests for eggs, bacon or other items. Afternoon tea with complimentary pastry offering or other purchased items including wine, cocktails or other beverages and snacks are terrific and very modestly priced.

While it's location is a bit off the beaten path, it's quiet, very comfortable and a delightful contrast from the more traditional hotel offering.

From the moment you open the door to Hotel Alstadt, you know you're in for a unique experience. You climb the curving staircase flanked with stunning art and interesting flower arrangements.

The receptionist was extremely helpful and walked us to our room to be sure it was suitable.
We had a lovely suite, down a private corridor. The corridor was decorated with original arts and crafts style woodwork. Our suite had interesting artwork, and a huge bath tub. The bed was comfortable, and even though the hotel is centrally located, the room was extremely quiet.

Location is great, with many restaurants, museums and a large shopping area within easy walking distance.

We especially enjoyed the delicious breakfasts and wonderful, complimentary afternoon tea and luscious strudel. Everyone on the staff was consistently helpful. A highlight of our stay in Vienna.

Room Tip: Room 89 has a fabulous bathroom and overlooks an inner courtyard.

We spent our golden wedding anniversary at the Alstadt From being picked up at the Airport to the flowers for my wife everything went smoothly. Excellent Value Without exception the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Near to the sites and several good restaurants. The tea and cakes after a days site seeing were an added bonus as were the evening snacks available. Definitely stay again if we come to Vienna. Met one couple who had stayed seven times!
